Happy

Happy

A Poem by Regan Meade
"

Share a smile

"

Look around

            Tell me what you see"

Do you see that man on the corner

Holding the handmade sign that reads

                        “Anything Helps, God Bless”

He’s not holding that sign for his health

Of which our country has deprived him of, might I add.

Do you know his name?

No?

His name is Tom, short for Thomas,

                        He toured in Iraq

His comrade lost a limb from an IED

                                    He came home with PTSD

Now every Fourth of July he hides in his under the jungle gym

trying to drown out the memories.

Look around

Do you want to know what I see?

Are you sure?

You won’t like the answer"

Well if you insist

When I look around I see that homeless family with two kids and a dog jumping into a supped up pick up and driving down the road to the Texas Roadhouse,

I see these families struggling to make ends meet being harassed by collection agencies because the medical bills aren’t being paid,

I watch these young teens walk around like they are a god’s gift to mankind

That each human should cater to their whims,

But they won’t lift a damn finger to help the fallen woman with a bad hip.

Why do I only see the bad in the world around?

Because that is all that is being shown,

Fear mongering has taken over what little common sense human’s used to have,

The sensitivity of the newer generations while touching is out of hand,

No one focuses on the good in the world,

What little kindness is being washed out by “fake news,”

                        Bright bold faced lies!

Do you remember that man that dressed up like Santa and raced to the hospital?

The man whose impeccable mustache and demeanor brought a child joy in his last moments?

Who sent that boy off with a hug and a promise

That he would get passed those pearly gates and be with his other family?

I do.

I damn well cry about it every time.

Or how about the young woman who followed an elderly gentleman out of the store

To help him with his groceries and making sure that the roses for his wife

weren’t crushed by the milk?

I do and I seek to do small things to bring smiles to people’s faces even if just for a moment,

The world needs a little happy right now,

Why not make it our mission to give a person a single smile

One that is not directed at a piece of tech but

With the meeting of eyes and a genuine thought that everything will be okay?

Damn, I really liked this one.
Sure, it's important to fix what's wrong, but let's not forget and lose what is already right. It was really nice to read a piece like this, though sad at the same time.
