she speaks boldly

she speaks boldly

A Poem by Shaun Rudie

I sit on the
stairs with the child
looking through the bars,
"what do you see?"
Small fingers grab hold,
not able to wrap around the
metal fully, her other hand on
my shoulder to steady
There is no spoken, her mouth
is open in a smile
Time moderates shapes and colors
before her, bright and bold
Subdued and subtle gradations
are virtually invisible to her, the
transition from dark to light
unknown
She speaks her young child talk and
I know only happiness, for she
speaks boldly
