My Son

My Son

A Poem by Mira ThePoetess

ღ My Son ... ღ

There were times when I didn't come to your call.
There were nights when I didn't sleep by your side.
There were days when I didn't play with you.
There were summers when I didn't take you swimming.
There were winters when I didn't warm you up in my arms enough.
I think I always saw that I had more important things to do
I always said "later"...
I never thought that a day would come,
When there wouldn't be any more "later".

Four years, eight months...
That's all the time I've spent with you.
Thought I'd live with you forever.
I should've known better
I should've seen it coming.
But I was too blind to read the writing on the wall.
Too impotent to catch you before you fall.
Too busy to notice that nothing could be taken for granted.

I'd hold you forever and more if only given the chance.
I'd kiss you more and more, cuddle you forever..
Sing to you and play with you.
I'd give anything to see your eyes shining again.
I'd give my all just to live one more day with you.
One more night to tuck you in bed and read you a story.
I'd give my all to be your mother for one more day.

Will you ever come back to me?
Will you still be a child then?
Will you ever blame me?
In case you don't understand,
I just have one thing to tell you:

"You'll always be my son"
Now and forever. ©

Author's Note

Mira ThePoetess
I wrote this poem 18 years ago ..... No matter how years kept me and my son apart, we are closer now .. and whatever circumstances or people who were supposed to keep him away from me or tried to make him hate me, couldn't really do anything in front of a love that instinct and nature had offered us. I am grateful to the sadness and suffering we've tasted for years, for it had somehow created a stronger bond, a better relation and a more intense love that nothing could be compared to.
I am to him what I always was and will always be, his mother.
He is to me what he always was and will always be, my son.

What a wonderful affirmation. I am touched. I have 4 children, and numerous grandchildren and that bond you speak of is very foundational to my life. I live for them as they do for their children.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful and true words. Separation, forced or not leave us to wish for different beginnings and endings. I did like the Author's note.

thank you for your comment. It came right from my heart to my paper.
You are right this is sad. I wish it were not. I am not good at tragedy. I hope you are doing better with him . he love of a child is instinctively set. i see now why you liked my poem about my son. We do the best we can with what we are given and in the end we are forgiven
