Bird Song

Bird Song

A Poem by MiriamMB

She appeared after the sun's quiet decay,

a white bird with fire

on her expansive wings,

two small stars in her eyes,

embers fell each time she

beat her wings against the wind,

she became the sky we once knew

she began singing strange, empyreal songs,

and we,

so desperate and afraid of what might

lie waiting in the dark,

followed her obediently,

she flew slowly, deliberately, as if

to lead us someplace new,

we bathed in the warmth of the suns

in her eyes,

we caught her embers and lit

a cavalcade of light and song,

we covered our skin and hair with the ash,

we danced feverishly with cymbals in our hands,

flutes between our parched lips,

and drums between our knees

the darkness at our heels

all the way to the edge of the earth,

straight into the sea.
