The Raven

The Raven

A Poem by Miss Lillian
"

This poem as you will see is based on Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. I did performance at collage and wanted to perform the original, but it had to be my own work; so this is my interpretation of it.

"
One night in bleak December,
As his fire turned to ember,
He sat sleeping, dreaming of his lover lost.
Until unwillingly awoken,
By a sound that was unspoken,
The silence was now broken, but at what cost?
As he rose from his chair,
He pondered who was there,
Tapping, gently wrapping at his chamber door.
"Tis some visitor" he uttered,
"A visitor entreating entrance, nothing more".
He swung the door wide open,
Only one word then was spoken,
Through the darkness, the whisper of his lover's name.
Back into the chamber turning,
All his soul within him burning,
The, this time from his window the tapping began again.
He flung the shutters wide,
And a raven flew inside,
And perched upon the bust above the door.
"Tell me what thy lordly name is"
He asked the raven plainly,
Not expecting the bird to answer, just to squawk.
But the raven opened up it's beak,
As if it were about to speak,
"Nevermore" quoth the raven in reply to what was asked.
Much he marveled this ungainly fowl,
Though it's answer little meaning found,
He stood staring at the bird 'til hours past.
The raven's eyes did burn his soul,
And his heart was turned so cold,
Until he thought he knew from where the raven came.
"Wretch" he cried, "Thy God hath lent thee,
By these angels He hath sent thee,
For the loss of my lover, you think I am to blame?"
As their shadows danced across the floor,
Quoth the raven, "Nevermore"
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting,
Always sitting on the bust above the door.
And his soul from out the shadows that lie floating on the floor,
Shall be lifted,
Nevermore.
So I guess this is a warning,
For those of you still fawning,
Pining, whining over lovers lost before
Beware the raven's visit,
Though its company exquisite,
It'll take your soul and keep it,
For evermore.

I know there are probably a few grammar mistakes.
Please bare in mind this is not entirely original writing, it based on Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven.
