Other People's Pain

Other People's Pain

A Poem by JR Darewood

The buzzing of flies on near-dead eyes
Trails of tears and the tremors of fear

The bile-like bitterness of other people's lives
makes my stomach twist but my tongue won't stop

Snap a photo
Scratch a note
I'll catalogue your agony

More than a lifetime of pain
buried in my brain
so I can show them but a glimpse

Moments of misery immortalized
Your brother's gruesome murder
   a footnote in an article
Your baby's starving shrieks
   ambient noise in a film

Other people's pain
I drink it up and bury it inside
so deep and dark even the bats can't see

until those long nights alone
when I try to sleep
tepid tears wet my eyes
and an empty heart wonders why
