I creep into… your room at night
And nothing can… keep you right
Creature’s stir… In my grasp
Coherent thoughts… They won’t last

Monsters come with me to bring the pain
Leave about them bodies of the slain
Reality splits inside your mind
In the darkness you will never find
Solace from the nightmares evades you
Absolutely nothing you can do

Moments of madness bring your doom
Take your place in a padded room

I see inside… your shattered mind
You see outside… ties that bind
Fangs and claws… grip your flesh
Close your eyes… there’s no rest

Lovecraftian nightmares come to life
Call of the sleeping gods in the night
Sacrifice those you love for their thirst
Thrown into a pit, you’re not the first
Shattered sanity is just a dream
Deep inside, let loose a scream

And I thought Poe was dark. This one makes Poe look like Pollyanna. What we are seeing here is a well rhymed description of a psychotic break. I worked in the mental health field for 27 years, and if schizophrenia could speak, it would sound much like the narrator in this poem. At one point, a "shattered mind" is mentioned. Schizophrenia has been described as a ''shattered personality." If you want to hear the voice of Bedlam, read on, but don't do it just before going to bed.
