A Rotisserie of Sybaritic Thoughts

A Rotisserie of Sybaritic Thoughts

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A Rotisserie of Sybaritic Thoughts

I was awakened
at a quarter till three

to an ominous sound of rain
splintering my consciousness,
tapping an Astaire routine upon
a neighboring carport

My cat

oblivious to nature

never minded the intrusion,
lost in rem sleep
in the mass configuration of
a down comforter

By a half past four
my mind overtly yielded to
a rotisserie of sybaritic thoughts,
as a voyeuristic moon

gave  credence

to the hollow side of a bed.

First of all, you sent me to google “sybaritic” – an excellent word choice. Second, your message is the height of subtlety, which I very much adore (especially when it’s not too obtuse for me to get the underlying meaning!) The “Astaire routine” is brilliant shorthand for this tippy-tapping sound and the last three lines are incredibly crafted for nuance. But I’m left wondering how you can see the moon when it’s raining!!?! *smile* I loved seeing Grandmother Moon shining down upon me in the wee hours last night, too! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

You have a way with words, its good you were woken up by that rain that time because perhaps this good poem would never have been born

I like the way you think, Cassie! ; ) ...thank you!
I knew the "sybaritic" pic and the provocative title would lead me once again to the girl I love. That concluding stanza shows the greatness of your poetic ability--the poem as a whole reminds me of your heart! I'll never forget.

Missing the one you love and being jealous of the cat....if only we could sleep that way. Awakened by rain and then thinking delightful sensual thoughts....what could be bad? :) Your poetry is always a joy to read. Lydi**

The din of rain on a roof (for me) represents a calming peace, a romantic atmosphere, a reason to close my eyes and daydream "sybaritic thoughts" … mmm! : )
I love almost every portion of this, Kelly, even (perhaps, especially) the voyeuristic part, but not the imagery of you "alone" in a moonlit bed.

Thank you, Dear Kelly, for again blessing us with another winsome facet of You! 〜 Richard
