Leftover Love

Leftover Love

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Leftover Love

I never dreamed

you’d walk away

leaving me to figure out

the small stuff,

with empty bottles of Grey Goose Vodka

and a mattress fit for a King,

playing solitaire

upon the high thread count of sheets

of an unmade bed,

of a leftover love.

Beautiful simplicity in this piece. The bed you made together, is now for one.

You capture the futility felt by the jilted when love walks out that door Kelly, in such a succinct fashion.

Thank you so much for reading!
Your words are like a hammer, uplifted at the beginning and ending with a blow. Such beauty and sadness all in one. Lovely language.

Your visit brings me a smile...thank you, Linda!
I like the way you've described "high-end" possessions to imply that all this luxurious STUFF does not soothe or keep one warm, when the core of the encounter is hollow & empty. This is one of the best uses of "setting" to convey a big part of your message. I like the term "leftover love" for its alliteration, as well as the idea that people who have TONS of resources will go dining on opulent spreads of food, always with leftovers, usually forgotten. A very short read that provokes many images & feelings.

You are most kind, thank you, Jim!
WOW, This is the poetry you are most famous for in my mind,
You let the reader imagine what may have happened with only a few well placed words and coy phrases.
Did your lover leave, or did he just get up to go make coffee?

Wonderful poetry here my friend.

Sometimes things happen to us, people break our hearts and we question how it came to coz those people seemed so true and real. this is so sad.

Thank you, Cassie! I am thrilled you enjoyed it.
The sad emptiness of a love gone wrong is so strong in this one, Kelly. Just because one person thinks it's over, does not mean the other can erase the emotion. "leftover love"....what a great alliterative phrase. Lydi**
