A Modern Day Cinderella

A Modern Day Cinderella

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A  Modern Day Cinderella

I was all about the pencil skirt.

With my hair in a chignon

and a tendril or two

intercepting the linear drop of an earring.

On numerous occasions

I’d treat myself to café lunches at noon,

of chicken rosemary with an almond pilaf

and a goblet of a red Zinfandel.

I’d sit in a corner booth,

peering at the comings and goings of merchants

while unpretentiously flirting

with the gentleman in a guise of gray.

A modern day Cinderella,  am I.

Nestled  here in my over-sized chair.

With my hair in a scrunchie

and a tendril or two

clinging to the opening of a terry cloth robe…

as I read from the pages

of a Harlequin romance,

sipping my herbal teas till noon.

Now pencil skirts and tendrils of loose hair, nice earings, and a soft smile and you are talking. This has an air of detachment and waiting set in your trademark nice elegant poem. The protagonist has hope and is a free spirit. Just hoping you are breaking out that Zinfandel when the herbal tea is done lol!

...there's a smile worth remembering! Thank you, dear Cassie!
This is a very well-manicured portrait of a lady who seems (to me) to be quite self-aware of how her image is coming across. I'm not inclined to feel warm & fuzzy about people who are so caught up in such seemingly superficial self-awareness, but your portrait is spot-on & fresh, as far as depicting so much more than just how this lady looks (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The portrait was of me, past and present. Thank you so much, Margie.

I've noticed some of your portraits convey a sense of being a self-observation. I used to be very mu.. read more
Love the juxtaposition of fancy to plain. Just as well...fuzzy slippers are comfy and easier on the bunions than glass slippers. The gentleman in gray may have been 50 shades of dull once you got to know him. ;> }

Now, that's a review that warms the soul...thanks, Ted!
Everything changes over time.. This is such an elegant and well-crafted piece, nostalgic, comfy and realistic. Many of us are dreamers and we live in a world mixed up with fantasy. I loved the detail in this cameo, the words that capture the moment with such alacrity.

It has a very nostalgic feel for me, which I was hoping would come through. Thank you, Jibey!
i am in love with your sweet Cinderella ... innocent and demure in terry cloth ;) its a good and healthy thing to imagine circumstance more romantic .. heroic .. and beautiful ... as long as we see it as such ... i see her sitting there .. chuckling a bit at her own fanciful enjoyment ..maybe closing the book with mark in place ... to pick up again tomorrow perhaps :)) mmmmmmmmmm dreamy!

It's one classic that pretty much stuck with me through my childhood. I wanted to put my own twist .. read more
A lovely helping of fantasy here Kelly. Looking as beautiful as Cinderella herself while reading romances and keeping an eye open for a possible Prince Charming. Superb imagery. Hope all is good with you.

All OK with me. Thanks for asking Kelly. . Take care.
this is so cool...i see her fantasizing of being in the cafe...having the lunch, flirting...but actually never really leaving her chair....just reading some more, and then imagining herself in the novel.

I love your insight, Jacob. Thank you so much!
Remembering the Pre-teen years... flirting with fate and
studying romance from a Harlequin book. Is the world ready for
long lashes and long legs... poetry for the ageless and mature.
