Age with Fractions

Age with Fractions

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Age with Fractions

We were the best of friends

and always told our age with fractions.

We both hated Math and asparagus,

tore away the crust from bread

and started noticing boys in the sixth grade.

We grew up through hand me downs and braces,

through years of sibling rivalry
and the constant humidity of the eastern shore.

We both married then moved away,
named our babies what we said we would in high school
and still exchange Christmas cards every year.

We were day and night,
black and white.

And told our age with fractions.

There is nothing like the relationships we have with siblings. An always friend. I remember when my sister left home I felt a great emptiness and like life would never be the same. But, as your poem shows, things just keep growing and we can be closer in other ways. Sharing the milestones of our lives.

I love the constancy of the poem. Things turning out as expected and creating a certain sense of fulfillment. That’s lovely and comforting.

I really enjoyed this poem.

I have a habit of putting little pieces of myself in my poetry. It gives my reader a little insight.. read more
This is a sweet trip down memory lane and one that many of us can relate to. To this day I count my sister as my best friend. Couldn't have survived childhood without her, lol. I love how you used the phrase, "we told our age in fractions" in the beginning and the end, like a set of poetic bookends. I really enjoyed this delightful poem, Kelly. It is always nice to think back to "the good ol' days!"

This feels like the narrative intro to a movie. It is a brilliant look deep into the bonds of sisterhood. An excellent and unique write. :)

Thank you, David. It's great having you here!
Fractions and asparagus, what a unique juxtaposition; just loved that.

I seem to recall I convinced myself I was thirty nine and nine tenths for ages. :))

Oh, how wonderful! Thank you, Carola...Cheerio!
A clever idea. This was an easy read, and well written. I am exactly half as old as I will be when I die at 140 years, six months, three days, and a couple of hours or so. I'm very optimistic.
Wasn't growing up fun? Sometimes we thought we wouldn't make it, but we did.
I miss fractions, but not asparagus.
