Age with Fractions

Age with Fractions

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Age with Fractions

We were the best of friends

and always told our age with fractions.

We both hated Math and asparagus,

tore away the crust from bread

and started noticing boys in the sixth grade.

We grew up through hand me downs and braces,

through years of sibling rivalry
and the constant humidity of the eastern shore.

We both married then moved away,
named our babies what we said we would in high school
and still exchange Christmas cards every year.

We were day and night,
black and white.

And told our age with fractions.

I'd forgotten about how many of us used to say "I'm nine and a half". We just couldn't wait to be older. (Would never do that now!)
Your story is sweet and makes me smile.

Thanks, Sam. So good to see you!
Quite like the idea of life in fractions.
Actually, half of everything works out perfectly in life.
Isn't growing up fantastic, the journey of discovery that never ends.

It certainly is. Thank you, Paul!
Such memories told with grace and aplomb. There is such beauty in friendships such as this.

They are our roots in life, a part of home we'll always remember. Many thanks, Ken.
awwwwwwwww that is so very warm and gentle in sisterhood ... through all the jagged rocks you remain .. absolutely love the title and that you close with it ... funny how 15 and 1/2 can be so important .. my Norma is 5 ft. and 1/4 inch ... a fraction that is a very tall deal ;) this line:
"We both hated Math and asparagus," says so much to me ... great poem! strong character representations .. the setting ..your heart ..the scene .. a lifetime ;) well done ... says i!

Age with fractions. That's kind of a clever and endearing way of saying my other half in a way. Through a simple poem, love can often shine through under the radar. Or maybe not...

Always a good poem from you my friend. :)

Oh yeah, we're definitely in sync! ; )
There is such a subtle, sighing song that rises in your story unfolding here. What a journey over time, the remembering, the moving away yet always connected back to those shared places. There is a whole world in these fractions.

A whole world - and another time and place. Thank you, Craig!
:D reminds me immediately of my best friend and myself ...

I love the embrace of single rivalry and the next line the constant of humidity of the eastern shore - this really appeals to me

only difference here with my friend and I is - we still talk every week

nice one XX

Our friends are the extension of ourselves. Thank you for the read and a wonderful review!
Very simple, lovely in a way that I can't explain. Well done, you've left the biggest mouth ever at loss of words. Lol.

Lol, thank you, Allie! Nice to meet you!
what a great poem the days of being 15 1/2 :) funny how that doesn't last forever,
no one ever says I'm 54 3/4.
