Age with Fractions

Age with Fractions

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Age with Fractions

We were the best of friends

and always told our age with fractions.

We both hated Math and asparagus,

tore away the crust from bread

and started noticing boys in the sixth grade.

We grew up through hand me downs and braces,

through years of sibling rivalry
and the constant humidity of the eastern shore.

We both married then moved away,
named our babies what we said we would in high school
and still exchange Christmas cards every year.

We were day and night,
black and white.

And told our age with fractions.

This is so endearing, and makes me thankful that I can relate to this type of lasting friendship/love. Wonderfully written.

...wonderfully said, Travis. Thank you so much!
so sweet and touching. straight-up precious. real and relatable. can't help but smile and be warmed whilst reading this. i remember well using fractions with age to try and grow up faster and feel older.
grown-ups would ask how old and we were & we would say something like, 'Seven and half'. oh that half.
too bad it doesn't work in reverse! one would have to be from another planet not to be touched by this ... :)

What we have here is a touch of genius... 'Age with Fractions' has that certain Wow factor Kelly without a doubt... The real feel if you know what I mean.

my pleasure entirely!
Oh Kelly this is so lovely... you never really grow apart:) I can pick up the phone and speak to my sister in Oregon and talk to her as if I saw her yesterday even tho its been over a year (that's the test of true friendship for me) those bonds never really break when you grow up that close but i can feel the sadness and longing in the lines as well and feel those same feelings too... but then I call her and it disappears:)

This has that nostalgic movie feel to it. The kind of movies I like, the ones where the things that count are personal things, emotional things, wondrous things. Sitting on the couch and pulling out memories one by one and having a good cry, a tear blurred smile, a shortness of breath that aches like a b***h. The two repeating title lines give a great spine. This was wonderful....

How wonderful for me that I can always count on you! Thank you my friend.
dear Kelly... your poem resonates with me... I grew up with my
maternal cousins... seeing them at Christmas and summers at the
Ocean. We had sleepovers and ran through the Cornfields.
We lost touch... but memories live on. I was the oldest cousin,
but not necessarily the most wise. Now some cousins have passed.
I have become more aware of what we shared... in black and white.
A cousin living in Arizona just sent me by UPS... an Album of photos of the
glory days when we were best of friends to the very end... but still fading slowly
but surely... leaving our children's children to ponder the mysteries of life.
truly, Pat
