Play It Again, Sam

Play It Again, Sam

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
"

...a nod to Casablanca and love

"

Play it Again, Sam

You were my first love.

Like the black and white version

of Casablanca,
there was nothing better.

I overlooked your imperfections

of leaving towels  on the bathroom floor

and shaving gel on the pedestal sink

…and the Merlot stain

that discreetly laid beneath

the potted philodendron,
from the night we christened every room

of our brownstone apartment
when you said you had to have me
“right then and there.”

Like the black and white version

of Casablanca,

the fog imminently clears

and my heart instinctively rewinds

to the melodrama of you and me

 “…play it again, Sam”

This is a great romantic poem well-crafted in the Casablanca tradition. I'm not even into romantic poems, but this one swept me up & carried me away, as if I were dancing in heels (never!) You use great details & the italicized quote is perfect -- kinda animalistic, kinda sexist & demanding, but back then, we girls thought brusque macho men were the cat's meow. I always wondered what my older sisters ever saw in John Wayne, for example. Anyhow, as you can see, your poem has immersed me! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I hope that next one is as good as this one. Liked the way the memories were sandwiched between the references to Casablanca. Also liked the sudden erotic buildup at the end of verse 3. Indeed, there was nothing better than Casablanca, especially the La Marseillaise scene.

Bravo...this was exceptional. I love the theme and the depth that it pulls you into. In my head I heard movie reels. Love, the golden age of movies and that need. Perfect.

Casablanca, an all time classic. How I loved that film and still do. Black and white nostalgic Hollywood. You capture the urgency so well here of that burning passion when two fall head over heels.. I also like the detail of the imperfections which are endearing at the height of romance which later can become an irritant. Very nicely conveyed Kelly. Somehow I missed this one when you first posted. Pleased I found it now. Hope all is good with you.

No ooooo. It has to be black and white. Colour would wreck it. It would take the sharp focus away :).. read more

I love old movies. The black and whites were the best, weren't they? Thanks so much, Dave!
Ah, when cigarette smoke was allowed to get in our eyes. Can you imagine how s**t that movie would be with them vaping and drinking kale shakes. Kale? Try cardboard, it tastes better. And remember, if you see a vapist, it's okay to punch them. It's allowed. 😀
They don't make em like they used to.
Ps, sorry. Got caught in grumpy old git mode. 😀
