Volumes of Nature

in the still of the night
lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas.

rain unremittingly beats like a drum
on the tarp of a neighbors pool,

while flashes of light

encroach the darkness
with ominous claps of thunder.

i pull at my covers like a child,
trepidation mounts
as fear hastens the rhythm

of my own erratic  breathing.

time in digital formation fastidiously blinks

as volumes of nature dissipate

in the still of the night.

What a wonderfully pleasant read full of nice, sensual adjectives and lending the reader to a frightful crescendo before easing back into the promise of better weather. Personally, I love storms, especially at night.

My oh my! I can feel the rumble of the house from the roaring thunder. See the sky lit up by the spears of lightning tearing open the night from its' darkness. Kelly I so much enjoy the imagery you have painted.
I appreciate the fear you feel from this stormy onslaught. Thank you for it all.

Take care - Dave

Kelly ... you got me salivating ... TMI, I know. But this is such a fantastic piece of poetry. It was all wonderful but that second stanza in particular stills the breath away. Brava, brava:)

I was a soldier. I saw the element of weather without being safe. I was in many wind storms in the desert and a tornado touched my Army truck in Georgia, tossed her. I liked the honest thoughts. Mother nature can be a bear. Thank you dear Kelly for sharing the amazing poetry.

You are welcome dear Kelly.
Lightning dancing across the sky truly is beautiful...it's the loud clad of thunder that follows that has me shivering under the covers. Lovely verse as always Kelly. :) Julie

Hey girl, you are a sight for sore eyes! Hope life is treating you kind.
As your President Franklin D Roosvelt said in his inaugural address, 'the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself;' but in the still of the night, the bustle of the day fades to black; and trepidation, as you say, mounts.

Mother Nature can be an awesome presence, but nowhere near as frightening as fear itself.

Really liked this.

Beccy.

He was indeed one of our best! Thank you, Becky!
Thunderstorms are a part of the fabric of life I our area, and I've seen some beauties. On Friday the 13th we were on the expressway going across Ohio on vacation when we ran into what turned out to be a thunderstorm produced by a tornado. The lightning was the worst I've ever seen … it seemed like one continuous strike for minutes at a time 360* around the car. Your poem reads very much like that storm, Kelly, good job.
