Volumes of Nature

in the still of the night
lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas.

rain unremittingly beats like a drum
on the tarp of a neighbors pool,

while flashes of light

encroach the darkness
with ominous claps of thunder.

i pull at my covers like a child,
trepidation mounts
as fear hastens the rhythm

of my own erratic  breathing.

time in digital formation fastidiously blinks

as volumes of nature dissipate

in the still of the night.

I’m down for the last two stanzas although i’m thinking “like a child” might be unnecessary.

I have always enjoyed a good thunderstorm, even as a kid. There is something very magical about the weather. Though I do understand how it might rattle some people and your poem tells that so nicely, even down to the flashing red LED numbers on the clock that has lost its power then recovered it again. There is always this feeling of "I am there" when I read your work.

Very well described and great images in this writing. I miss rains, the storms and the thunderous joy that accompany it, but also it can cause fears and panic if the rains are loud and very stormy. these lines evoke brilliant images and holds the reader gripped through the write.
"lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas."
"rain unremittingly beats like a drum"

There is an eerie feeling to the poem but at the same time childlike innocence and appreciation for the nature. Thanks for sharing, enjoyed reading this write Kelly.

Great details! Saying "tarp of a neighbor's pool" is one of those brief details that sets an entire scene . . . & you convey the perfect mix of fascination & trepidation that I feel when experiencing a powerful storm, as a child or adult. I also love how this could be a metaphor for how it can feel when faced with the storm of someone else's anger or grief or betrayal (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

love it, a very descriptive poem, i particularly like... "lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas."
reminds me of the times when i was still flying & saw the lightning also go upwards & pop out of the top of clouds.

the power and beauty of nature often has this dual nature of being awe inspiring and also scary.... unlike you out there on the west coast, here in Pa. we got a lot of rain past 2 years.... there is nothing like sitting out on the back deck as the rain literally pours from the sky and it seems that time itself has stopped...

love your poem Kelly...

Being warm and safe inside, while simultaneously enjoying one of nature's impressive light shows is a rare experience to be thoroughly savored.

Thank you kindly, Dave. I overwhelmingly agree!
What a wonderfully pleasant read full of nice, sensual adjectives and lending the reader to a frightful crescendo before easing back into the promise of better weather. Personally, I love storms, especially at night.
