Volumes of Nature

in the still of the night
lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas.

rain unremittingly beats like a drum
on the tarp of a neighbors pool,

while flashes of light

encroach the darkness
with ominous claps of thunder.

i pull at my covers like a child,
trepidation mounts
as fear hastens the rhythm

of my own erratic  breathing.

time in digital formation fastidiously blinks

as volumes of nature dissipate

in the still of the night.

The power of nature unleashed....it is beautiful and scary at the same time. Your choice of vocabulary is always so wonderful, my friend. Great write. Lydi**

It always enlightens me, having your presence here. Thank you, Lydi!
Although thunder and lightening can be spectacular to watch, I also find it frightening. You have captured that well here Kelly. Wonderful use of language in your lines. You took me through the storm and out the other side into the stillness and remains of the night. Your posted image is fabulous. Hope all is well with you dear Kelly.

I love storms and always have... a good lightning storm will wake me up and send me running out to watch the show I am like a kid when a storm comes:) They always are a stark reminder that we are nothing in the face of nature no matter what construct we fabricate the truth is it is never lofty enough to withstand her. This feeling and portrayal in this write is electric lovely dear Kelly

a pleasure and a half, at least... and all mine..
Texas has received more volumes than it can handle while, here in Virginia, we've had none. Why can't we all just have that happy medium, where all is green and light? I so long for those volumes of nature that dissipate in the still of the night. This is beautiful!

I'll take a steady rain over a torrential downpour, any day. Thank you most kindly, Linda!
Wonderful description of a heavy night rain. It's really a good talk on nature.
And the metaphors you employed here are perfectly befitting.

Great job, Kelly.

I used to be petrified of thunderstorms when I was younger but grew to love them as I got older. Great ink, Kelly.

Its the weirdest when you are at a restaurant or bar and a wicked storm takes out the electricity. its so surreal. At the house it brings on silence in everything but the storm. Kinda distorts reality like darkness does. This was super delicious, I could see it and feel it and hear it. Great description and emotive language.

Throughout my life, all the way back to childhood, I've never been scared of thunderstorms or lightning. Rather, I am in complete awe of the sheer power of nature unbridled; and as usual, your post here echoes that same emotion. "In the still of the night . . . " oh, the anticipation!
