Volumes of Nature

in the still of the night
lightning dances across the sky
like a painter's brush on canvas.

rain unremittingly beats like a drum
on the tarp of a neighbors pool,

while flashes of light

encroach the darkness
with ominous claps of thunder.

i pull at my covers like a child,
trepidation mounts
as fear hastens the rhythm

of my own erratic  breathing.

time in digital formation fastidiously blinks

as volumes of nature dissipate

in the still of the night.

This poem captures well the awesome power of nature in a thunderstorm, beautifully depicted in the image you share. You describe the physical impact and draw out the emotional response, the child snuggling deeper into the bed, the sense of fear and the need for comfort and assurance... such as we all need, so often. .

Strangely enough, I do miss them, since we seldom get thunderstorms here in California. Thank you, .. read more
Even through age taking childhood fears and replacing them with grown up worries, lightning always sends me back to those childhood times where we held our breath in awe and fear of the anger of it all. Even the drumming of the rain resonates in that dull thud, adding to the soundtrack of the apocalypse.
I was never scared of it as a child, only growing up made me scared 😀
Beautifully captured Kelly. I'm sure I was holding my breath reading this. 😀

I really love this one Kelly. Your words almost made me feel like I was sitting in a concert put on by Mother Nature ...., (rain beating like a drum and claps of thunder.) I actually find listening to thunder storms exciting, that is when I am tucked inside my house and the power hasn’t gone off yet :-) A wonderful poem through and through!

Great seeing and ‘reading’ you too! :-D
very relatable. you know i like nature so i'm in heaven. i love the title. i remember the fear it invoked as a child, i still get uneasy as i'm awed at her power. mother nature sure can turn up that dial as you remind us ... :)

I don't mind the lightning, it's the thunder that gets to me! Thanks, Pete!

when we were little, we would say that the thunder was god bowling ... :)
thank you for this glimpse inside the outpourings of Mother Nature ... such power .. is humbling .. we rightly are humbled as we pull at those covers .. one wants a warm soul mate at such times ;) will view the quiet after the storms in a different light now .. she has satisfied herself .. and shares her afterglow with those trembling ... nice read for me ma'am .. never disappointed visiting your pages .. the urban setting you give this is a little different from you .. great job!

Thank you, Brianna. It's always nice to meet a new reader!
Kelly... we had a night of thunder and lightening off and on
for about three hours. It was comforting while being
mysteriously frightful and voluptuous in nature.
We slept like Babes on a thunder cloud that settled on
clouds of rainbow hues. truly, Pat

Nature has a way of seizing us, holding us hostage, and sometimes it’s what we need to escape the day’s minutia and remember how we’re mere specs in an untamed, beautiful universe. Always a pleasure to read your work, Kelly.

My pleasure, truly.
we had this last night...the pre-fall storm....and we hope to survive through another coming winter...as the storm penetrates the quiet.
