December Bleeds Your Memory

December Bleeds Your Memory

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

December Bleeds Your Memory

Christmases past are calling

as I settle into the abyss of darkness,

of days accumulating

like a January of snows.

The realm of your existence

is forever fleeting,

pulling me further away

from the precipice of death,

sequestering my consciousness

into the light

for December bleeds your memory.

It has been a year of immeasurable loss. Let us pray for a better tomorrow, as we gather for another singing of "Auld Lang Syne".

Hello dear Kelly and you are welcome.
Wonderful title Kelly. Funny, I am a December baby ... this situation in which we find ourselves definitely pulls at the psyche. We are inundated with bad news and terrible statistics. There seems to be little chance of escape, but then I suppose there will be an ending to it and all we can do is hope we are still standing when it is over.

We are all a finger-snap away from crossing the veil.

Love the photo.

Hang in there ... be safe.

Dear Kelly, I don't know how I missed this post, but I read it on the 30th anniversary of my Dad's death. My January is your December. I think we were all praying for a better 2021, but mine has got off to a terrible start with the loss of my sister's husband to covid. Before his time, like many. There is much suffering. Keep safe dear poet and thank you for the eloquence of your poetry.

Thank you dear Kelly. Take care.
Fitting and deliciously somber. Makes me want to cry I think. You always have a way of pushing my buttons. Hope your 2021 is much better!!!

Now that's something that's good to know! ; )
Amen to the "immeasurable loss" comment in your authors note. Few comment on the death toll, but I watch it every day. Even tho I'm not one bit touched by covid (alone in the wilderness), the massive death toll is what makes 2020 feel so bleak. This December felt more askew than any before & your poem captures the bleak helter-skelter sensations I felt from most who were out there slugging away at the insanity (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

My dear Tim, how wonderful seeing you here! I am smiling from ear to ear, truly!
I am no stranger to loss . . .strangled at times with my own sad memories that patiently wait in line, constantly wanting my attention. So line 'em up boys and girls, I've got more than enough Grand Marnier.
This "review" walks with you as we have a shared path.

Yes, we have. And there are more paths to come, my friend!
we are all ever walking an edge. goodness and love (memories) save us from despair. the holidays can be a difficult time. we mourn for what was and hope for what will be. well said ... :)

Your last line delivers itself like an incantation for us all, Pete. Thank you!
I get the feeling the words are being addressed to someone from the past, possibly one who is no longer with us. The memory of this person is not a bad one, however; it seems to buoy the speaker up in a difficult time. Anything strong enough to pull one back from "the precipice of death" is something to be cherished.
