For Sentimental Reasons

For Sentimental Reasons

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

For Sentimental Reasons

“My beer-drunk soul is sadder than all the Christmas trees

of the world.”  - Charles Bukowski

another year has gone

leaving me to reflect upon

old acquaintances

and lovers

to transitorily  hypothesize

if you still wear baseball caps backwards

or read prose by Robert Frost

on nights when you can’t sleep

if you still smoke Marlboro cigarettes

and drive a red flatbed ford

that plays the static of talk radio,

and if on occasion

when the moon is full

 think of me

the dichotomy  of pros and cons

and the Irish in me agree

you were the one that got away

but on occasion,

a Cabernet Sauvignon

often relinquishes thoughts of you

for sentimental reasons.

Ah, the one who got away. We think back and wonder what might have been. We get so sentimental and remember only the good times. Somehow we protect ourselves from the bad times. I loved the quote and the references to Frost and Marlboro! Kelly, your romantic poetry never disappoints. Fantastic. Lydi**

Just between me and you, Lydi, I think I had more than one that got away. ; )

LOL their loss!

How I love to see a new face on my page! Thank you so much!
Oh yes
That memory
The one that got away
I confess, I'll not forget her
Deep brown eyes, beer, a worn out long bed 4x4, then tears,
Much too nicely expressed

That great title pulled me right in Dear Kelly. Your exquisite words and font weave and swirl and evoke so many memories-like Bukowski's cigarette smoke... What a great quote and photo filled with meaning. Your poem lulls me to remember in tones of b&w ( figuratively Bukowski/Frost) and the red of that Sauvignon and flatbed Ford.. I love your imagery and nuances andcolors. I love the absence of punctuation-flowing just as dreams do. This is perfection-drop mike (boom). xo

dearest Kelly... you are the Epitome of Poetry.
You can make a Grasshopper smile... and Kittens purr.
The innocent Romance of the past is always tucked

Dearest Pat, what a lovely thing to say! You really overwhelmed me this time - thank you!
I was just writing to Jacob about Bukowski and spilled wine yesterday. I'll be pondering on this for awhile...transitorily hypothesize. Love it!

Isn't that a wonderful quote? Thank you so much, William. So nice to meet you!
New years ... old memories and a fine cabernet ... so much to be said. Can't say that there is a sadness to this or just acceptance and a certain melancholy that can be dispelled with time and wine.

Good one Kelly.

The memory is so alive yet....your words are so vibrant with his details...somehow the one that got away becomes more special, I feel, because their thoughts are etched in pain and pain does bring everything so much more alive. We live and relive, create and re-create that love and they become our legends. Your words bring on such emotion to the fore! It's wonderful to read your poetry, once again, dear Kelly! Life is so good! ❤
