A Novice to Art

A Novice to Art

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A Novice to Art

i was a novice to art

he was an amateur at best

stroking my scars and imperfections

with the highbrowed demeanor

of a scholar.

our conversation was sparse

indulging in the contrast of shadow and light,

as he gathered his tools

in preparation

like a priest in benediction.

catching my breath i looked away

trying hard not to gaze upon

the smile behind his probing eyes,

the low brimmed fedora

that brought his chiseled features

into close proximity.

he encircled my  anatomy

like a lioness in a cage,

pointing my chin towards my left shoulder

capturing ribbons of braided sunlight

in the tendrils of upswept hair.

i took another breath,  exhaled

my gown descended to the floor

in a diaphanous pool

a novice to art.

Interesting, with some good word usage. It brought to mind a scenario in which, a woman and man meet in the context of an artistic pursuit of some kind. Perhaps, in the same dance group or an orchestra? Anyway, because the woman is possibly kind of new to all this, as a "novice"; it creates a barrier or tensions between herself and the guy she has eyes for? However, the guy is probably a snob; and doesn't know what he might be missing.! If he appreciated the woman enough, then her novice status in art; would not deter him! He seems to like her physical beauty, as is clearly suggested in verse four? Anyway, this is probably the best work which I have read by this authoress; so far.

such erotic intentions written here Kelly. The softness of these words, the slow seduction of touch, Kelly, you are no novice to art or to making the reader feel alive. Please, I fell. Just let me lie here and savor this poem.

Very good well written. This is a good read. Surrounded by stories of decorating tip, weather forcasts, and shopping trips.

Thank you, Pat. Your presence is always appreciated!
Kelly,
The best artists know how to paint pictures on our minds. Just the other day, I was thinking about something I read in a philosophy class decades ago. It came down to Aristotle saying there is no such thing as a perfect circle, while Plato argued there was and all he had to do was close his eyes and imagine it. You also lead my thoughts to what happens when Tequila gets involved.
But then I think of Renoir, and his friends with their "highbrowed demeanor" while in the act of "capturing ribbons of braided sunlight
in the tendrils of upswept hair." What was their secret in those Victorian times? Must have been a good one.
RENOIR, "Bather with blond hair" I was going to paste this picture here, but there is no way to do that...
On the other hand, as I told my students, "If you want someone's attention, Poetry works... every time because a painting is just a painting, but imagination is perfect."
