Size Five (and a Half)

Size Five (and a Half)

A Poem by Narnie

by all accounts                              by all accounts

old shoes should be slung               old shoes should be slung

             out                                              out

battered by trips of a                    with a flippant remark

long weekend here                       of a worn out sole

an afternoon there                      scuffs or frayed laces

picking over pebbles                     for sturdy new boots

slight salt water residue                 new days n' fresh ways

from that midnight paddle              with a hop or an idle skip

sly smile footsie under                    but, cold feet aside,

not so polite dinners                  there is the garden to do

dancing at an impromptu                   and these old shoes

radio playing in                               are so very

          some café                                      comfy.

Sometimes sole and soul are the same...

This poem I can truly empathize with. Thanks to your clever way

Great pair here! :) I love that the poem and format are so constructive...cleverly done!

Yes indeed they are. I have a closet full of them (Who keeps buying me shoes?) but only ever wear three pairs of them at most. Ninety-five percent of the time, I wear my rediculously worn out crocks. I've tried to retire them, but they just keep ending up back on my feet.

Sly and sweet...you've touched on love from the bottom up.

Very nice, indeed.

ha I agree with Sue, made me smile - I love the layout - so clever! the memories, places and things - imprinted on that scuff, all the defects little reminders - much like us perhaps! nice!

Oh, yes... this brings back some memories... all my shoes had that 'salt water residue' when i lived in Brighton... the dust and wear of the seaside town with its beaches, clubs and bars... and gardening was my first job at 15 too... i guess i skipped off in brand new shoes when i left Brighton. I'd never thought about just how poetic shoes really are... excellent poem! "with a flippant remark / of a worn out sole" .... love these lines.
