Castle on Cloud Nine

Castle on Cloud Nine

A Poem by Nath
"

Ein Luftschloss auf Wolke 7

"

I woke from my dream, its loss I lament,

As I lie awake in the dead of night

Only a ruin remains on cloud nine

Mehr ist vom Wunschtraum nicht geblieben.

No more is left of yonder wishful dream I dreamt.

Aus nicht mehr als Schall und Rauch

I bent the nothing into something, and I built

Habe ich ein Luftschloss mir erbaut,

A castle in the sky by sheer force of will

Doch wie ein Kartenhaus ist es in sich zerfallen;

But alas, it crumbled like a house of cards!

In Trümmern liegen die einst so hehren Hallen!

Its halls lie in ashes, debris and broken shards.

Die Welt in der Traumblase,

The world in the bubble

Geboren in einer REM-Phase,

Born in a REM phase

Ist mit ihr geplatzt wie eine Seifenblase,

Is reduced to rubble

Die sich um eine Nadelspitze krümmt.

As I snap out of my daze.

A needle's pinpoint popped the bubble, moving as swift

As the spinning wheel turns round, as the shuttle flies in shifts

Das den Stoff webt, aus dem all jene Träume sind;

Across the loom that weaves the magic cloth

The very stuff that my dream was made of.

Um dieses Hirngespinst bin ich betrogen

I have been cheated out of yonder dream

Dabei habe ich mich nur selbst belogen:

But I only lied to myself, that much can I see:

Denn diese Welt, ich weiß, die gab es nie -

The world I made up never was, never could be

Sie existierte nur in meiner Fantasie.

It was a fleeting fancy, no more than a fantasy.

Author's Note

Nath
Bilingual poem. Started out with the German original and translated it. It came out rather smoothly, so I edited the English version around a bit, and it could now stand as an independent poem, but I am still going to keep the two versions of the same concept together. Tell me what you think; and those of you who understand both versions, tell me what you think of the changes I made.
Happy reading!
