God's of Space

God's of Space

A Poem by Nathan Thompson

Sun, what strength you have, what power you possess, you hold us near without even knowing it, we spin around you, all nine of us. You hold us tightly, we belong to you. We are your children. Each of our own power is nothing compared to yours. Because of you we are here. And still, you lend us your strength, give us our light, and our heat. How can we thank you, you and your brothers and sisters.

We look at you family of one hundred thousand strong in your mother Milky Way and think they are so pretty. They shine over us through the night. And although we cannot see them, they are there through the day as well. We give them names, we try to see our future in there patterns.

That is what we see…patterns, twinkling lights. We do not see you for what you truly are, gases, burning furnaces of hydrogen. The true embodiment of energy, ancient. A million years would feel like nothing to you. You have existed long before the birth of our planet, and still your energy will flow from you long after your planets have died.

How I wish I could fly amongst you. See your beauty up close, feel your heat, feel your light, feel…your presence. See the planets that are held in your gravitational grip. Do you have a gas giant? Do any of you planets have rings? What dances do your children do in orbit around you?

Oh, all Stars in the Heavens hear me please and answer my questions! Are you sentient? Do you know what you are? Do you feel joy at the life that has grown because of you? Do your own planets give home, to beings like us? How we close our minds to your magnificence. We do not see you for what you truly are, God’s of space.

Thank you all for the beauty you give us, for the wishes you occasionally grant, and for the inspiration you give our bards, for the songs written about you, the poems talking of you greatness, and the stories told about you. May you live to the end of the universe, for the universe would not be worth existing in if it was void of your presence.

Amen.

Sorry....just really felt like it needed one there!!! How lovely to write an ode to the sun. You're right, I'm all into nature and energy and I often neglect the sun. I'm usually up on what the moon is doing, but the sun gets treated like a nuicance to me, which is a bit sacreligious, if you ask me. I angrily swoop my sun visor from in front of me to cover the rays coming in the side window. I seek shade to avoid the heat. I spend most of my days in doors, seldom looking upward to greet the sun. Although, on very rare ocassions, I do perform my version of "sun salutation" yoga in the a.m. towards the beautiful crowning morning break. What a wonderful piece this was to be in....nice spending time here. Thanks so much for sharing this with us....especially now for me....as summer rapidly approaches and if not for having just read this I'd be likely to continue on begrudging it's shining in my eyes. Good write!
