Rough Sketched & True

Rough Sketched & True

A Poem by Neville

Rough Sketched & True

As compelling

To an artist’s eye

As moist dry stone

Walls in autumn

Lichen crowned

Green tinged and

Majestic browns

The colour of near

Day old leverets

Yet nowhere near

As wise

Resting rock still

Pon flayed barley

While in the very

Distant distance

Those same artist

Eyes fix upon

A flock of startled

Yellowhammer

As they did rise from

Berried hedgerows

Boughed into the sky

As pollen might

From rough scythed

Piss the beds

Indeed a sightly sight

And true

A fledgling morn

The artist

Does indeed delight

And sets his easel down

Rough sketch complete

Author's Note

Neville
Yellow Hammer = a species of bird, a pretty one and increasingly uncommon here...

Piss the beds = an old English term for dandelions due to their diuretic properties/effect if or when ingested...

Leveret = a young hare

Read this poem more than once to take in all that beauty everywhere. You open up and lift the reader’s imagination to what your eyes beheld in the sky and around with exquisite words (noted leverets & hedgerows) and imagery. The rough sketch itself is just great.

I love the way you SHOW instead of tell . . . that an artist must be observant of his/her surroundings. Your rich & colorful details demonstrate that you are indeed an artist of words (((DABS))) Fondly, Margie

Wish I was sitting with you as you surveyed this active scene - I know that I would noe be able to sketch it as clear as you have in words

How very kind of you Wild Rose thank you & true :)

We're so focused on capturing things that we don't make time to absorb them.
I enjoyed this, nature gives us so much inspiration. We need to take it in.

Through your voice you've conveyed a scene equivalent to an artists brush. Your words through rhyme and scenery flow like a stream. The images are frozen like that of a painting yet comfort as much as if admiring its beauty in silence.

This is very enjoyable to take in and contemplate.

Nicely done.

I loved this poem Nev! As an artist it'd be my favorite first of all. And there's a really adorable imagery! It's always great when poets write with imagery because that really makes the readers see through words.
Great work!
Keep writing, good luck!

.....................…. Sure :)
A wonderful adventure through the artists eyes Nev, with the delightfully unexpected and completely immature reaction to hearing "piss the beds" and still finding it impossible to stifle a smirk, even at my age, where piss the beds is a serious worry. 😀

Years ago. I knew a painter dying of cancer, he would paint the sea, from morning to nightfall. I bought him food and coffee. I would listen to him talk. Your words reminded me of him. To create something beautiful and ever-lasting. A wonderful poem shared my friend.
