And Then I Knew How

And Then I Knew How

A Poem by Jacob Baca

I sat on a hill and saw a storm approaching,
Days away it was from me,
though others it would come more timely.
So I gazed at the canvas and wiring of lightning
and saw how my neighbors would wade through the weather.
They packed up their homes, assembled their wagons,
and the three different families moved in different directions.

The first family was true, Integrity in all.
They thought to race to the storm's tail, to quickly see the end.
Soon they had stopped, the rain was too much,
and upon their anxious heads, lighting was struck.

The second stuffed in themselves in a carriage, Smart they all were.
Deciding to travel around the clouds, avoid any hurt.
But the clouds traveled with purpose, and the families action too slow.
With the rage of the earth, the clouds buried them in snow.

The last family was timid, but also cunning in their own way.
They thought to run away from the wind and its rain.
But the wind blew quicker and no matter how far they fled.
The storm would throw its lighting and they wound up dead.

Now seeing what happened all my hope had been trashed.
Surely I'd be dead. So continue, I would,
To sit on my hill, enjoy the view, and read a good book.
I fell into a nap but when I awoke
I found that only my clothes had been soaked.

The storm was behind me and the sun was ahead.
And then I knew how to survive through the world's dread.
