A Screenplay by Nicolerhi
"

This is the script for a video bible drama I wrote for my group to record for a competition. Enjoy! :)

"

(scene 1)

(lights up on a temple. Priests mill about, praying, going to offer sacrifices. The 2 chief priests are in the foreground, speaking to each other. Chief priest 2 looks troubled)

Chief Priest 1: is something on your mind, old pal?

Chief Priest 2: only that jesus. I just wish to capture him so that he will stop spreading his lies!

Chief Priest: worry not. I’m sure we’ll capture him soon.

(Judas Iscariot runs in)

Chief Priest 1: what are you doing here?

Chief Priest 2: state your reason immediately or we will have to call the guards.

Judas Iscariot: you’re looking for Jesus, right?

Chief Priests 1 & 2: yes…

Judas Iscariot: well, i know where he is and i can lead you to him.

Chief Priest 1: well, don’t delay! Hurry, let’s go capture this “king” of the jews! (laughs)

Chief Priest 2:  guards!!!

(2 or 3 guards enter)

Guard 1: yes, sir?

Chief Priest 2: follow this man (points to judas) he will lead you to jesus. When you reach him, have him arrested!

Guards 2 & 3: Yes, sir!

(judas exits, the guards following close behind)

Chief Priest 1: Malchus, my servant!

Malchus: yes, sir.

Chief Priest: follow that man and the guards. Personally see that they get to jesus.

Malchus: yes, sir. (exits)

(scene 2)

(When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.)

(Judas & guards enter)

Jesus: who are you looking for?

Guard 1: We are looking for Jesus of Nazareth.

Guard 2: By order of the chief priests,

Guard 3: we must arrest him.

Jesus: I am he.

(guards fall to the ground)

Jesus: who are you looking for ?

Guard 1: Jesus of Nazareth--

Guard 2: By the order of--

Guard 3: we must--

Jesus: I told you that I am the one you are looking for. So, if you are looking for me, let these men go.

(Malchus enters, out of breath)

Malchus: is this the man my master commanded you to arrest?

Guard 1: jesus of--

Guard 2: by order of--

Guard 3: we must--

Malchus: well then, arrest him!

Simon Peter: No! (having a sword, [he] drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.)

Malchus: OWWWW!!!!! (falls to the ground, writhing in pain)

Jesus: Peter! Put your sword away.

(he does)

Jesus: shall I not drink the cup that the father has given to me?

Simon Peter: But Jesus--

Jesus: (to guards) if it is i of which you are looking for, then arrest me.

(the guards get up & have seemingly regained their confidence)

Guard 1: Jesus of Nazareth!

Guard 2: By the order of the chief priests,

Guard 3: we must arrest you!

(the crowd him, and lead him offstage, away from his disciples)

(scene 3)

(enter Jesus with the 3 guards; he is bound, one guard is on either side of him, and one guard is behind him.)

Annas: well, well. What do we have here?

Guard 1: jesus of nazareth.

Guard 2: we were ordered by the chief priests to arrest him.

Annas: well done, guards! Take him to the courtyard!

(points to guard 3)

Annas: except you. You stay with me.

(guards 1 & 2 exit with jesus)

Guard 3: may i ask why you order me to stay with you?

Annas: you are overstepping the bounds of your station!

Annas: oh, how wonderful it will be to see that jesus killed. You know what my son-in-law says...you know, my son-in-law? Caiaphas? The high priest? Ring any bells? ….anyways, Caiaphas always says that it “is expedient that one man should die for the people.” ….whatever that means!

(scene 4)

(servant girl stands guard at door)

(Jesus and Guards 1 & 2 enter and head towards door that leads to courtyard. They exit through the door just as simon peter & the other disciple enter)

Simon Peter: Jesus!!! (tries to follow him through the door)

Servant girl: excuse me. What do you think you’re doing?

Simon Peter: I-I ...I need to follow….I just--I need to go through that door!

Servant Girl: I’m sorry, but I am under strict orders to only let certain people into the courtyard.

Simon Peter: ugh! Fine!

(goes back to the other disciple)

Simon Peter: how are we ever going to get in there?

The other disciple: ssh. Just...wait here, one moment.

(walks up to servant girl. Says something inaudible. Servant girl nods and lets the other disciple in.)

(moments pass. Simon Peter is anxious.)

(the other disciple returns and whispers something in the servant girl’s ear)

(the servant girl waves for him to come forward)

Servant Girl: you may enter.

(stops him before he is able to enter)

Servant Girl: your not one of this jesus’ disciples, are you?

Simon Peter: what? N-no! Of course not! What a-a silly thing to suspect….(laughs awkwardly)

(scene 5)

Simon Peter: how were you able to get past her?

The other disciple: I know a guy...

(Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.)

(Jesus is bound and kneeling on the ground away from the fire in the foreground. The fire is in the background. Guards 1 & 2, along with the other disciple, Simon Peter, and a random servant warm themselves.)

(Caiaphus enters with a guard)

Caiaphus: ah-ha! Is this the jesus i hear so much about?

C’s Guard: Yes, sir, this is him.

Caiaphus: finally shows his face after hiding and spreading his little message in secret for just...so...long (laughs)

Jesus: I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.

Caiaphus: (laughs)

Jesus: Why do you ask me?

Caiaphus: what did you just say?!?

Jesus: Ask those who have heard what I have said to them; if you want to know what I said.

Caiaphus: how dare you!

(when he had said these things, the guard standing by strikes Jesus with his hand)

C’s Guard: Is that how you answer the high priest?

Jesus: If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?

Caiaphus: take him away!

C’s Guard: Yes, sir.

(Guard takes Jesus away)

Simon Peter: (whispers) Jesus…

Guard 1: You’re not one of his disciples--

Guard 2: are you?

Simon Peter: huh--what? ...i mean, I am not.

A random servant: huh that’s weird

Simon Peter: what’s weird?

A random servant: I could have sworn you (points to Simon Peter) were in the garden with him. You were the one that took my cousin’s ear clean off. Poor Malchie…

The other disciple: is he alright?

A random servant: as well as one can be without an ear...but nevermind that. (to Simon Peter) answer me this: did I not see you in the garden with this ‘Jesus’ fellow?

Simon Peter: N-no! Of course not!

(a rooster crows)

(scene 6)

(outside. Caiaphas’ Guard has brought Jesus to Pilate. A crowd of jews have formed around him)

C’s Guard: (looks around at the crowd of jews; does an aside to the audience) he doesn’t a stand a chance.

Pilate: what accusation do you bring against this man?

Jew 1: if this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you

Pilate: hm. how about this. Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law

Jew 2: But it is not lawful for us to put anyone to death!

Pilate: If you don’t mind, I’m going to bring the man inside for private questioning. Remain out here until I am done. I won’t be long.

(scene 7)

Pilate: Are the King of the Jews?

Jesus: Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?

Pilate: Am I a Jew? Your own nation, the chief priests, the high priest...all have delivered you over to me. What have you done?

Jesus: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.

Pilate: So you are a king?

Jesus: You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world"to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.

Pilate: What is truth?

(scene 8)

(back outside, Pilate convenes with the congregation of Jews)

Pilate: I find no guilt in him.

Jews: WHAT?!?!

Pilate: But...you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?

Jew 3: Not this man, but Barabbas!

Jew 4: (to jew 3) Barabbas the...robber? (gulp)

Jew 3: Of course! Barabbas!

Jew 4: If you say so…

Jew 5: Yes, let the thief go!

Jew 6: crucify this man here!

Jews 7 & 8 : Release Barabbas! ...

All Jews:  Release Barabbas! (repeating)
