I'm Still Young

I'm Still Young

A Poem by Norah
"

These simple thoughts actually crossed my mind while I was considering what to major in college.

"

I’m still young

So young that I don’t know the difference between parsley and coriander

Why are they different yet look the same

Do they have different tastes?

I don’t know I still have to find out.

So young that I don’t know the difference between salmon and trout

Why do they look different yet taste the same?

I don’t know I still have to find out

So young I don’t know the difference between ‘silly’ and ‘lame’

Why do they have different definitions yet mean the same

Well, I don’t know I still have to find out!

I’m still young and don’t know what I want to do

How do you even expect me to know?

At this young age I have important decisions to make; only if you knew,

Knew the pressure I am facing

The ambitions I intend on chasing

I have to make decisions that will determine the course of my life

Oh my, I’m still young and I have to find out

Find out more about myself, wait, do I even like chocolate cake

I mean, do I really ‘like’ it?

I don’t know I still have to find out.

I found out early, that you can make friends with girls with just a smile,
I found out early, learning to dance made a big difference along with the smile
I found out early, know the things that people want to know
I found out these things early to get where I wanted to go
If you come from a family without money, you do what you need to do, you cannot by on just your wits alone,
It pays to have the charm when you are not alone

such beautiful words indeed..thank you so much :)
I really relate to this. I remember feeling like this when I was also deciding what to do in college. It took me switching my major 3 times or more to finally figure it out. We're expected to make a life altering decision at such a young age. Also, that last bit is hilarious. Everyone loves chocolate cake xD Nice job.

I am happy you liked my poem..thank you so much for the review !! :)
It's true, at 18, a lot of people....most people....have no clue what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Still, they are asked to choose a major in college and follow a course of study that might seem totally wrong for them by the time they are 22. I liked the whimsical feel of this.....chocolate cake? who doesn't like that? really! LOL Good one, Nora. Lydi**

Thank you so much for reading my poem and commenting..I am very happy you liked it :)
Oh Norah, I love the way your mind works, I can imagine the train of thought - hmm what shall it be 'Architecture or Aniseed', 'Politics or Parsnips' ...lol - Im teasing... sorry

This says so much - it has 'worry for the future' threaded all the way through it but is encapsulated in a bubble of innocent 'coming-of-age' fun, which relieves the pressure on reader and writer, I feel, relieves the tension - done with the style of a movie director who wants to entertain the viewer not scare the crapola out of them.

never change !! :))

I don't know if we ever stop finding ourselves. I'm only beginning to feel I know myself. You state the feeling so eloquently.

I guess we never stop finding ourselves in life, thank you for reading my poem Jennie :)
The title drew me to this poem, Nora - though I am not still young, I am still trying to figure so much out as well. I like the subtle allegory in your examples - why do we look the same yet have so many differences? A very thoughtful piece that we all can relate to, wherever we are on the journey. And about that chocolate cake... you'll just have to keep trying it to be sure! :)
