Holiday Memories

Holiday Memories

A Poem by Norman 223

Reminiscing during isolation.

When I retired from working life

It was like a long holiday.

We even bought a house by the sea

But we still still kept going away.

It seemed like every few weeks we’d seek

 Some other foreign clime.

'Cos my wife said travel broadens the mind

Well, perhaps it did,….one time.

But the biggest problem, now, with me

 Is recalling what I'd seen.

For my memory  now has reached that stage

Where I don't know where I've been.

I look at all the photos that I can't identify

I know I took the pictures, but can’t think when, or why

There are ancient buildings, rolling hills and unfamiliar faces,

Which ended up in a cupboard with old airline-labelled cases

Have read your poem, read Neville's review and am left smiling into Monday! If you look at your photo sorting as a farce, and that in turn could be on TV or on the West End (one day!) making you loads of cash.. would it help if you gave this or that place an exotic name?! ' Dedicated to My Diminished Memory.. come back, missing you.' Sorry, imagination got the better of me because your poem and N's review made me laugh, sad tho i'm sure it is. Keep safe..

I have got to that stage myself Sir Norm, have spent half of lock down looking down at zillions of old black n white, sepia toned and early colourized pics of yesteryear.. It is such a shame I can not put a name or a place to many of them.. I have tried to compensate by being as descriptive or applying a witty, (at least to me) caption to each of them... Trying to put them onto this pc is almost impossible to do fast as well which makes the whole procedure somewhat, if not very tedious ...

Tis good to know that I'm not the only one... I reckon there is a lot like us out there who are just too shy to let on.... Stay safe n well the pair of ya.. All Good Things,

Now, having reached the age of 89 I'm still trying to write as an optimistic exercise in keeping senility at bay, although I reluctantly have to accept age, unreliable memory, pacemakers and synthet.. more..
