Who we are

We are the ones who are always there for them.
We are the ones who know all their secrets.

The ones who have shared the memories
And the ones who have shared the tears.

We are the ones who get excited for them when they find a boy who makes them happy.
Yet in the back of our minds we are always careful and suspicious.

We are the ones left behind each night as they go off on dates and have fun.
But we stay on the phone to hear every detail retold.

We are the ones who watch them fall in love and drift away.
The ones who suddenly become second choice.

We are the ones who warn them of dangers to which love blinds them.
We know they won't listen, but we have to try.

We are the ones they come crying to when he is gone.
The ones who pick up the pieces he leaves behind.

Through the tears they apologize for taking us for granted.
They say they should have listened and promise next time will be different.

We cry for their pain, stroke their hair and nod in agreement. 
Though we know it isn't true.

This is what we do because we love them.
This is what we do because
We are the best friends.
