The Light

The Light

A Poem by Olu Dumare

Have you ever tried to wake someone

From a deep sleep?

It’s not a pretty sight

Grumpy frowns as the sun rays

Penetrate their eyelids

Disrupted dreams of fantasy

Abruptly merge into the tragedies of reality

Sometimes not even the lights enough

To shake off the slumber

A shot of caffeine

Then another

And another…

Some know it’s time to wake up

Still they reach for that snooze button

That imaginary soothe button

No energy to do something…

While the kids sneak and stay up all night

Just the thought of missing something

Causes a fright

They love the light…

Hate the dark

They know that’s where the monsters are

Light kills the vampires

They disintegrate to dust

Those degenerates of lust

Who anticipate the dusk

I told a man the light was beautiful,

He couldn’t relate

Said before he could equate

We’d have to fix his blind state

First teach me to see

Then we’ll talk about this light

My whole life it’s been night

I pray it’s not too bright…

I enjoyed your writing! There are many ways light could be interpreted, but some people are not able to enjoy it as we are, and even then, the light is always taken for granted.
