An Early Morning

An Early Morning

A Poem by Omikron

I laid my body to rest
But rest did not comply
So I spent forever turning
Forever yearning
Listening to a symphony of choked snores
While birds greeted the morning
I decided that rest would not comply
       This time

So I lifted myself
On the legs that had carried me through the world
I wandered languidly like a ghoul
Without order or direction
Until I was finally seated on my throne

My fingers created a tiny fire
That lit a tiny fireplace in a tiny glass cup
A warm scent of bourbon vanilla filled my lungs
A tiny euphoria
From a tiny candle
In a tiny glass cup

My vision was impaired
As I pressed the button that woke the beast
The beast of my civilisation
The beast that they call "computer"

I squinted and turned my head sideways
And I faced the outer world
My mind was stunned by the beauty in the sky
Pink and blue colors were resting upon a sleeping city
       The only ones awakening
       Were me and the sun

The rest of the world was in trance
They were somewhere else
While I was here
Me and the rising sun
And for a moment I felt
       Something so utterly pure
       For a tiny moment
Tinier than my tiny vanilla-scented fireplace
I felt

Like the whole world belonged to me.

the musings of the insomniac ;} like your narrator i am wake most every day in the wee and witching hours ... me dog Beauregard typically will also get up and we go out together to gaze at the sky ... usually filled with stars ... your prose/poem brings me to that almost sacred silence of early dawn .. so well done says i ... i think personally i would not repeat "comply" ..its strong in L2 and is weakened in repetition .. in my opinion of course ... i like the spark of imagination in the lighting of the candle and seeing a fire in the hearth ... i like a clean shot of Jamison now and again so i can smell the bourbon ;))
i think the pic is perfect! putting it first might have even more of an impact and leave the reader with the close of your poem instead of the pic ... sorry if you aren't sleeping well .. i don't bother fighting it anymore but i am retired and can sleep or not when i please :)))) Happy New Year Omikron! peace and joy!
