THE RIGHT DECISION

A days adventure in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains!

 
As I exit my four by four and step into Colorado wonderland, an early
morning breeze spreads the sunrise over Bear Lake trail head like
smooth home-grown honey. About a quarter mile upward a small
amber ground squirrel pauses from his search for breakfast long
enough to look at me with a crooked little smile as though he were
expecting me to know what was supposed to happen next.

I make the first move and the tiny piece of fur takes a giant leap
twice the length of his body and lands with a firm grip on a lodge
pole pine where he's had sleeping arrangements for the past season
As I trek on by, his noisy critter fussy-voice tells me I'd better not
come back this way again!

I arrive at the "deciding spot" where I either take the short easy trail
around Bear Lake or the very strenuous trail to the right leading to
the top of Flattop Mountain....a 4 mile rocky hike UP and I do mean
up beyond the horizon and any hope of taking in a deep breath of air.

Seeing a group of young muscle bound teens heading my way, I
nonchalantly bend down to adjust my hiking boots. When the group
passes by I look to see that no one else is coming, turn to my left,
put on my floppy hat, take in a DEEP breath of mountain air, and
congratulate myself for making the right decision!
