THE FIRST TIME I KNEW

Each day was different and unique,
From the moment I first knew and anticipated
Meeting you for the first time.
I would not see you for several months,
I didn't know your name, I'd never spoken to you,
Heard you laugh or seen your face.

I didn't know what to expect from you nor what
Your expectations and requirements would be of me.
I'd never done this before...but neither had you.
Although this journey had been taken by many others,
It was the first for me and the first for you.
I was frightened beyond belief...were you?

The moment you took your first breath
Began a lifetime of firsts for us both.
The first time your perfect hands touched my face...
The first time I brought your rosebud lips to my breast
To take nourishment from the inside of my body...
The rush of mother's milk...my own smile from your mouth.

The first time you hugged me back and made me cry.
But the first time I heard you say, "I love you Mommy,"
Was the first time I was so happy I cried, and it
Was the first time I knew....why I had been born!

Dedicated to my son Rodney and my daughter Tammy
I love you to the moon and back,
Mommy

You speak of the pregnancies of your children, the nourishment and tenderness before they were born; and then after... all the hugs, smiles, giggles, and finally the "I love you mommy" which when you hear this from your children for the first time, mommy's just want to melt with joy. In the first part of your poem i was thinking about a romantic interlude for the first time, but then at the end I realized this was totally different. very well written dear Sharon.

Nature's true beauty- birth and God's gift. You express the anticipation of that moment. I loved it.

what a beautiful piece. I have not seen my children in over 20 years but I can certainly empathise with this even though I'm a man. Lovely poem.

I stood in the NICU, holding my daughter. This tiny life, helpless, wholly dependant on me. How would I ride to the occasion? I knew nothing beyond books. I had never grown up with an example. But somehow, I successfully raised her to be a teenager. Such a long road. And what obstacles. She is autistic. And so much still lies ahead. But that first moment... Indelibly, it has woven itself into my life. Now and forever she is my baby. Well written, my friend.

Such a beautiful piece. I remember holding my daughter for the first time as mum was being put back together after a C section. This beautiful, warm, totally unaware bundle of joy would now become the centre of my life and will be until my last breath taken, she is 22 this year :))
