In Her Eyes

For my mother who passed away this week due to complications from COVID 19.

In Her Eyes

With a look she could stop us

in our tracks for awhile,

showing the hint of a twinkle

when hiding a smile.

Green like the sea, 

commandeering honor and truth 

but sending waves of love

as she gazed at you.

In her eyes we were everything

she ever really wanted.

We knew she would be there

and be someone we could count on.

She attended each performance,

at games our biggest fan

and if anyone tried to hurt us

she would always take a stand.

But her eyes, big as saucers

which topped her tiny frame,

that once missed nothing

as she called out our names

were little use to her now

her vision was going

but our love for our mother

will forever keep growing.

Author's Note

This was one I had written before but made a few changes. I was able to see her one last time before the virus struck. I have no words for the emotional impact it made on all of us as it did so many other families.

I remember reading a beautiful poem you wrote for your mother. Time heals all wounds but losing a mother is somehow different. I take comfort in that she lead such a good life. The pandemic has kept me from seeing my mother as often as I would have liked. I was not with her when died but we FaceTimed often. Those visits are locked in my memory. Thank you your kind words Pat.

I am so sorry for your loss, Dara.
So tough to lose a parent...lost both of mine some years back.
To watch their eyes dim, bodies deteriorate...so hard, since they once held us up when we were not sturdy enough to stand on our own.
Life reverses itself.

I love how you have described it as having “held us up when we were not sturdy enough.” It was terribly sad to see the light fading in her once clear green eyes and the roles were definitely reversed as I watched my sister who still lives in the same town care for her amidst the pandemic.
