My friend the Brown Thrasher

My friend the Brown Thrasher

A Poem by Patricia Wedel

On a lazy summer afternoon I was visited by a Brown Thrasher

He was standing up on his sturdy legs as though he was a Professor...

He wanted to speak of his travels in the Mid West and across the plains

so I offered him sips of hummingbird nectar as a sequester of sorts...

It seemed to relax him and he began to chirp and sing melodies of

Cactus flowers dancing beneath silver moons of raptured moments ...

The Arizona sunsets were memorized in his mind as he seemed to

mourn the beauty he left once upon a time.  I offered him a Nest

that was available for just a few songs and a dance.

Pat, this poem is a lesson for all about the importance of spending quiet time, alone, with nature, reflecting on life and asking questions we can't otherwise hear or consider. We do impose our thoughts on other creatures, though they'll never know it. I lived in coastal Georgia for 15 years, and I can't escape the sadness every time I see a cotton field or blueberries... and sometimes the Brown Thrasher, the Georgia State Bird. A more than warm, enjoyable read.

Since I've been absent from the cafe for a week, I have 36 read requests & I immediately clicked on THIS POEM to start catching up! I always feel that way when I see a new poem from you! This is one of your best poems. I like the more "out there" aspects of how you personify ("professor" . . . "sequester" . . . "memorized" -- brilliant!) You always personify nature well, but this one is sparkling & popping & thrashing a few more fathoms further than your usual *wink! wink!* Fondly, Margie

Truly mesmerizing, the poem is very smooth, and the words flow. It is an amazing story, with some work I hope that my skill level will get to yours, maybe even better, but for right now I am just a beginner. My poem "Revenge" is not nearly as good as this one, just amazing.

You make the world sing, Pat!!! Your poem is such a reminder to folk to do what you do, look and listen, stand and stare, not miss a single - in this case, special visitor. Seems he was a travelling troubadour -who knows! You've turned his brief visit into an occasion, using such great language! Thank you so much... :)

A beautiful encounter with nature itself. We rarely think where our birds are going or from whence they came and yet their journeys are often quite spectacular. A charming poem.

Hello Pat, the birds that come into our garden are such a delight. It was wonderful to learn about your new friend the Brown Thrasher and his visit. Your description and imagery is beautiful, as were your ponderingd on his travels and where he'd come from. You certainly made him welcome. I love that. I am very fond of my garden birds, especially the blackbirds who fill my early morning with their melodious notes.
