Dark Thoughts

Dark Thoughts

A Poem by Paul Bell

Chelsea’s fantasy was to get raped

Buddy only felt sane when he was at war

Joe knew at some point he would get caught

Mary was whiter than the driven snow

Chelsea’s fantasy was getting stronger

Buddy just hated civilian life

Joe was stalking his next victim

Mary was in chapel confessing dark thoughts

Chelsea had made up her mind

Buddy walked the streets anger building up inside him

Joe lay in wait

Mary couldn’t understand her dark thoughts, being so devout

Chelsea knew the time had come

Joe made his move

Buddy saw what was happening

Mary prayed on the cross

Chelsea felt the grip release

Joe pulled out a knife

Buddy disarmed him knocking him down

Mary spoke to God begging forgiveness

Chelsea pulled out a gun and shot Buddy

Joe began to rise

Buddy slowly bled to death

Mary sat in the confessional box confessing to murdering two men.

The duality of the human condition pulling us right or left, good or evil, sanity or insanity. Hidden dark thoughts is delving in this deep realm with clarity and accuracy. You wonderfully highlight that with skill.

Yes siiirrrrr. You are welcome.
Liked the way you made these four stories hold together until they converged. All rivers run eventually back to the sea.

Lol, keeps the boys in blue busy.
When I first read the first line, I was like "woah! the hell" and as I continue reading, I got chills. this is nice. Split personality and insanity.

Keeps you on your toes.
I think you captured the the fact that there is always so much more "underneath" the facade we put on to show the world.
Those "dark thoughts" are inside us all to some extent and are both fascinating and dangerous dependent on their level

Yeah, the dark is always in there waiting to come out.
Poor Buddy.
This is very eerie, I have read it several times, start to finish, aloud, and each character in isolation. Before scrolling down to read that Mary and Chelsea are the same character, I thought the message was one of irony; Mary, a devout catholic seeking forgiveness for her dark thoughts which compared to the other characters in the story don't need forgiveness at all. I thought the message was of guilt, blame, and religion.

Now that I know Mary and Chelsea re the same... it is even scarier this way. The innocent character is gone. There is no innocence in this story. It's quite honestly very freaky, because t can be true. So to the point as well.
It's a thriller Brilliantly done.

Thanks, Laura. Must admit it had me asking questions.
great story telling didn't realise Chelsea and Mary were the same, now I know it gets better with every read, like the second time you watch Fight club,

You can't beat fight night.
Mary spoke to God begging forgiveness
Chelsea pulled out a gun and shot Buddy
Joe began to rise
Buddy slowly bled to death
Mary sat in the confessional box confessing to murdering two men...

Had she. had and did they? Such erratic actions, intentions..

Scanned the above, read the above, read it aloud. Then, suddenly, read each character's thoughts or/and behaviour in order, start to end. To be honest, still unsure as to your intention, found it frightening.. as if demons had been on the scrounge for the characters' spirits - perhaps. Did what i rarely do, read other reviewers' words.. and yes, maybe this extraordinary writing is due to multiple personality disorder. OR, is is it the rapid deterioration of each character's mind? Dear goodness, you've made me work for .. a sane comment to make.. and I can't, Paul.

Weekends in, no time. lol
Paul, I've studied violence for 25 plus years, and taught related courses to law enforcement officers. This captures what I've often told young officers and civilians. Human beings are the greatest protectors on this planet... and the most dangerous predators. Sometimes more than one person exists within a single brain, and it's a terrifying reality. That's what I believe you've illustrated here. This is short horror story masterfully condensed into a poem.

Didn’t get it- then I got it Paul! A study in multiple personality disorder? Great format with fragmentation, personalities that handle the light and others that handle the dark sides. I had a patient like this once- I will never forget her. Her name was Rose and she was Jesus, Satan, and little girl- at least those. You brought back a memory of her with this amazing write.

Must be that name, Rose. They do tend to inherit weird personalities.
