That Guy

That Guy

A Poem by Paul Bell

Every shopping centre has that guy

You know, that one

Not quite there

Bumbles around most of the day

Introducing himself to anyone who cares

It's been a while

The pandemic has kept us all away

I saw you today

Not a care in the world

Got me thinking

All about sanity

Yours would be exactly the same

We’re all going nuts

As groundhog day marks another date to oblivion

Made me chuckle

You would be alright

The people would be back

You would be there as usual

I might even think to myself

Do you know what

That guy’s got it all there

Not a care

Thousands wouldn’t agree

Gravestones would testify to that

But you’re a sort of beacon

To all that’s good

In a sane world

Where being slightly mad

Is actually the new normal.

We're sure living in mad times, or are we.
Yes ! Of course! We see everyday such people and think of how silly they are. But in the end , silliness is all that is remembered..during this pandemic, we sit and ponder on such things about which, once upon a time, we never cared about! But the hope that everything will be fine is all that has kept us going after all and all these things, keep us laughing during such a strenuous time!! So well said!!!

lol true I mean
this very appropriately relates to the guy that showed up in a shopping center here with only red ginch around his privates and over his face, and all the remainder covered up with clear Saran-wrap.

They do sort of make your day or make you drink more.
What a wonderfully enjoyable and uplifting write this is Paul; quite made my day; and you are so right that every shopping centre has one. Ours is quite often found standing by the lifts on the ground floor and for reasons known only to himself, haranguing shoppers for not taking the escalator. :))

Einstein once said, that he only difference between genius and insanity is that genius has its limits. I suspect that in many ways, 'that guy,' is way ahead of dear old Albert.

Mayhap there is method to his madness....

I learnt a long time ago that not everyone is what they might at first seem to be.. some folk are way before their time and only come into their own when the right, or maybe the wrong buttons have been pressed..
I have no doubt we all know someone who fits the bill Paul and lets face it.. being a bit quirky is imminently more desirable than being slightly sane.. except maybe in the new world....

I'm just gonna keep my head down and taking the pills.... Nice one sir

Paul, another case for the assertion that sanity is relative. Yes, I know this man! The world would be something less without him. Delivered with such an entertaining scene. Timely write for all.

Yes, I think all the sane people have been found out.
That guy could be perfectly sane. In fact saner than any of the so-called normal people. And that’s what makes it more scary and interesting than anything else. It’s creepy what the virus is doing to us.

Definitely made me think, maybe that's the problem, overthinking is driving us nuts.

I take a pill when I overthink. Its better to sleep than think.
I absolutely LOVE the juxtaposition of this guy we all see around & think of as slightly loony, but then after the pandemic lockdown (which we assume this guy spent doing what he always does, oblivious to the lockdown) & then in the end, this lunatic is the only sane one left! That is such a great storyline for these times. Thanks for digging down to a much deeper look into this pandemic & coming up with a concept that knocks us upside the head a bit (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I think we are all born mad in some way, some express that, some dont! It's just this lockdown has made us new kind of mad and this is also becoming normal gradually. However, this write makes me miss observing the world outside. Every line shows the actual picture.

Think you are right, the obscure has come right back into focus now, maybe make us better people.
