Storms That Flash Through

Storms That Flash Through

A Poem by Phibby Venable

This morning is a thunderstorm
of lightning in high jumps
flashing across the silent peaks
of mountains that hold their own

The air is alive in a respiration
of hurried breathing & your face
lingers in the skyline exhaling
everything you gave before giving up

The rain is wind blown in this
indecisive world of heavy boughs
though the birds sing relentlessly
whatever the weather, some pleasure
they always find in the miracle
of morning, delights them to exuberance

I have a song for thunderstorms
that is a low hum of rising
for the warmth of Spring silhouettes
flowing through the colors of bent flowers
that refuse to lay low, but lift,
again and again to the hard slaps
of the restless wind

I have no argument with gray skies
and love the hard blown hillsides
howling from a canvas
of watercolored storming

a complete prose piece by itself.
