As Does the Sunflower

As Does the Sunflower

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

As Does the Sunflower

The rich soil pampered the tiny seeds,
the sky watered their need.

Tiny seeds waited patiently
as the sun gave its heat.

Nestled inside, the seeds warm and cozy,
pondered what they might be.

Little by little, they began to sprout
from beneath the earthy ground.

They were attracted to the sun
much like air to a human’s lungs.

With the rising sun unto a new day,
their substance grew up in its way.

Feeling the call from the inside out,
in their beauty, they didn’t doubt.

Now knowing their gifts,

They tarried not to drift.

Soaring to their lengths,

opening wide their petals in strength.

They know their power
was in being Sunflowers.

The Sunflower graces the field,
content in bathing in its source.

Knowing it was created to praise,
drawn to its force.

Come what may,

I pray my faith ever towers.

That I rise each morning,

as does the Sunflower.
