From the Valley to the Mountaintop

From the Valley to the Mountaintop

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

From the Valley to the Mountaintop

Jugged rocks dotted the valley
where she was rapidly descending.

Having walked days,
her energy receding.

All alone

and though she yells,
none answered,
except her echoes for help.

Literally in the valley,
she couldn’t be any lower.

Though she keeps moving,
she’s no closer.

The sun blistering her back,
she keeps going steady.

Though the mountaintops are distant,
they are there for her to see.

Having run out of water
and packed food, she is at a loss.

She hadn’t planned to have car trouble,
she hadn’t planned on getting lost.

Her legs as noodles,
she couldn’t take another step.

Falling to the rocky ground,
she cries tearlessly to herself.

She’s sure she’s in the valley of death,
all hope lost in getting out.

Then, hearing herself pray,
wanting to shout.

But her throat is dry
and every bit parched.

Her voice gone,
she prays in her heart.

Night fell over her,
blanketing her with a bitter cold.

Praying with earnest through the night,
she recalls hymns of old.

Morning lit the sky
as the sun woke from slumber.

Feeling a renewed energy,
she picks herself up and lumbers.

Finally, she begins to climb the mountain,
climbing, climbing, she feels weightless.

Taking very little strength,
she even feels at rest.

What’s going on?
her mind asked,
this is far from normal.

She doesn’t know what’s coming to pass.

Making it to the top of the mountain,
she is equally surprised by how renewed she feels
and the scene she`s beholding,

Her spirit, still.

In the next second, she awakens
to familiar surroundings of her bedroom.

Vaguely, she realizes it as a dream,
but not a mere dream--a dream telling her truth.

She now cries tearfully,
knowing her Lord is with her.

For the scene in her dream
had been gifts which He wanted to give her.

She then heard Him in her spirit,

The desires of your heart will I give, and none can rob.

She now understood she had to trust Him

from the valley to the mountaintop.

You are welcome dear Melinda.
This is a powerfully-written ribbon of SHOW instead of tell! I love that I recently mentioned I'd rather see this kind of thing told as a story & now here it is! I love how resilient you are, even tho some of my critiques have been tough. I love how your way of putting it into a story is quite different than I might've imagined . . . which is why we can each write the same story & it comes out all different ways. That's what I love about being in a writing community. To see how differently all the other writers see the world. Thanks for being so amazing! (((HUGS)))
