At the Well

At the Well

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

At the Well

Carrying a vessel upon her shoulder,

She went to the well at high noon.

Her goal to partake of the water,

Led her to an encounter true

Her shame yielded her to wait

So she would be alone.

But a certain man met her

At the well with water of His own.

He was resting

After a long journey,

And asked the woman to give Him drink.

But bewildered was she.

She was quite perplexed,

For He wasn’t her kindred.

He told her of the gift of God--

To her He ministered.

Expressing desire for the living water,

She said that the Messiah was coming to tell

All there was to know.

But lo, it was Jesus who was the well.
