Something dreadful Something unforgettable

Something dreadful Something unforgettable

A Poem by Prynka

I still remember the night

the night I traveled by bus

the usual bus I traveled almost every weekend

a luxury night travel bus

a bus you sit at night

and reach in the early morning

every travel is memorable

but this one was unforgettable

in a day or two I was supposed to get engaged

engaged to a man whom my parents chose

I fell in love with him even before he proposed

we both lived in the same city

but I insisted i travel alone

travel to the same destination

but different ways we chose

all excited I sat in the bus

talking to him for hours and almost dozed

sometime after midnight

I still can remember

there were many men

only few were we

the bus was filled with

different people

some were foreigners

I guess had come for a vacation

few were the usual IT guys

all they wanted was a good sleep

one was a photographer

he held his camera - his proud obsession

few men were drunk

could smell their highs

with my sweet memories I slept

in the late night

few hours after mid night

the bus jerked

could hear the sudden thud

suddenly the bus turned

almost a full circle

felt the bus is like the two hands of a clock

and projected to make an angle

Diagonally it stood on the median

woke up to hear the sudden screams

in the sudden tension somewhere I forgot my dreams

all the windows and doors were jammed

the driver and conductor were seriously injured

our legs were caught under the seats

forty people caught with no air to breathe

few people had their legs fractured

could see the legs dangling

someone took the step

found something to break the window

one by one we jumped out of the window

we sat on the highway

in the middle of jungle

it was a chilling winter night

most of us in barefoot

we walked and talked

about the briefly stopped lives

with no phone networks

we couldn't reach our dear ones

photographer still clicked some candids

of the dreadful night

we saw the rescue bus coming near

collected few baggage which ever we could

bid goodbye and wished well for each other

carrying this memory

something dreadful something unforgettable.

This is a compelling description of a scary bus ride, well done with a slow gradual build-up, starting with the reason for being on the bus, then describing other passengers, distracting us with your observations, we all notice fellow travelers in such situations. Your beginning has a bit of a sing-song carefree mood, using the repetition of certain key words in your descriptions. To be honest, the crash itself wasn't very dramatic as one might expect. There's only ONE WORD to describe how it sounded: "thud" (this seems tiny compared to what was happening). I suggest putting "thud" in all capital letters, at least. Or maybe add a few more "noise" words to show this crash going on & on, as it probably felt like it was doing. Other than this tiny bump of a crash, the overall poem is well done with strong details & straightforward storytelling (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
