Always, Catalpa

Always, Catalpa

A Poem by R. Oxley

warns of temporary blossoming

fleeting tenderness of springtime

despite how often we tried to teach lovers her name

dulcet amber on the tongue

she is the only one who ever stayed

we find shelter, away from home and sweltering

sun, in her soft-heart leaves

we have nothing

but time to bask in her regal shade

listen to the well pump drip-dripping

we blow wishes for tomorrow

by the crisp light of autumn

release her downy wings from their long cocoons

we will meet them again in time

once we have all grown into something beautiful

as frost settles, she shows her long, woven limbs

reaching for the horizon, the clouds

a new somewhere anywhere else

she makes room for travelers to tell their stories and keep

her company while she sleeps
