Caged

Alone beneath a darkened veil
I lay down and cry
Because my wings are clipped and I am caged
But I was born to fly

I pass the time and release myself
Through reading books and dreams
But all of this means little
Still the days grow dark it seems

For books end too soon
And I cannot sleep forever
All I want to do is run away
Somewhere wherever

If ever God should ask me
Of what I want today
My words would be so simple
And this is what Id say

Give me the strength to walk alone
Take your hand and point me home
But not to where I live I'll say
But where I'll see my greater day

Give me hope and make me wise
And open up my darkened eyes
And one last prayer before you go
This my God you need to know

Release me from my prison
Release me before I die
Because my wings are clipped and I am caged
But I was born to fly

Excellent poem, especially the last three stanzas! I thought it flowed very well and I'm always a fan of full circles. Just a grammatical thing-- "for books end to soon" should be "for books end too soon". Great job!

For criticism... the line "But all of this means little" seemed to interrupt the flow for me where it was placed... not sure why but after reading it I had to pause and reread the stanza because something about it felt off. Also in the beginning of your third stanza, you mean "too soon" instead of "to soon". And you're missing an apostrophe in "And this is what Id say".

Otherwise... this is a wonderful poem. The rhythm is so well... rhythmic... it just flows perfectly from one line to the next, especially in the last three stanzas. Even though I'm far from any type of person who believes in deities, it really is a great poem with beautiful imagery. The rhyme is very well done.
