Gone Highway

Gone Highway

A Poem by Rain
"

The path we travel..

"
i buried all I wrote
with no thought of keeping track
deep in the ancient earth..
along an empty highway
beneath a rusted iron trestle..
behind a vacant laundromat

all i ever saw or felt..
lies silent and decayed
never to be found or read
by those who followed..
the print i made

my writings lie hidden..
in the earth where i've been
a sacred resting place
exposed to time and wind

i walk among the countless souls..
who slept in the alleys wine
and screamed for all to hear
i was someone..somewhere..sometime

The last line of this piece is chilling. It conjures up a vision in my mind of the ghosts of those from ages past. I can imagine them reciting these lines, as if to to attest to the cycle of life and human experience.

It conjures up these lines, which I discovered in a search for epitaphs and inscriptions on headstones.

"Remember me as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I,
As I am now, so you will be,
Prepare for death and follow me."

I do not know the author of those words, but they hold an important message about life, which I see echoed in your own words.

Indeed, we are all someone, somewhere, sometime.

Thank you for a most enjoyable read, dear Brother Writer.

I have read and reread this, and am still sitting here lost in the feeling that has risen in me. It is a haunting piece, hauntingly beautiful and somewhat sad in its truth. Our writings are us, what we knew, thought, believed, imagined...there are ancient writings, and old writings, and new ones that last through time read and reread, but there are many that are unknown, lost, never noticed or found. We all go the same way, that highway that our small feet touch as soon as we enter the world...we move at different speeds, through different eras and weather, but we all move toward the horizon it takes us to in the end. I am not doing a review to do justice to this piece...in my humble way I am just letting you know that it affected me much more than I can adequately express. I do love your writing style and voice.
