A Last Conversation Before She Leaves

A Last Conversation Before She Leaves

A Story by Matthew Soliguen
"

Story from my life

"
"You didn't study again did you?" She asks.
"Do I ever? I'll pass anyway." I replied.
"Not if you get dropped." she replies.
I chuckled.
"Right, I'm on my last absence." I casually tell her.
She stabbed a piece of meat on her plate and it bounces off to the Nth dimension.
"Fake meat." She says under her breath.
"Fake meat." I agreed.
She looks at the small bowl of soup that came with her meal.
She pushed it further until it hit my plate.
"Wha-?!" I exclaimed.
"You eat it, I'm not a vegetable kind of person." she says.
She casually pulls out a book and begins reading it audibly.
"Can you not?" I tell her.
Her volume increased significantly.
Why do I put up with her?
"Hey Matt?" She asks.
"Why are you calling me Matt, call me Ray, like my friends do." I replied.
Her brows furrow.
"You're not a friend to me." she says.
"But I'm also not more than a friend." I replied.
"Are we really going to argue about this." she asks.
I stayed silent.
That was it, the conversation is over.
"Like I was going to say, remember when we got lost behind a sugar cane field behind your school?" she asks.
"If I recall correctly, it was me, Geocadin, and Joel that got lost behind the school sugar cane field." I replied.
"We also did, a week after you guys did it first. You screamed your crushes into the air-"
"And nearly got killed by an imaginary crocodile, yes, yes. I remember that day because I arrived late at home and had a scolding from my now brother-in-law." I replied.
"Remember what I said to you then?" she asks.
Her gaze focused on me. Her brown eyes seem to cut through my soul.
"I...... Don't. Did you even say anything back then? You were just scared because we were lost." I replied.
She sighed in disbelief.
"You're hopeless, really, you are, you never pay attention to anything." She says.
I got a little angry at that statement. Mostly because it was true, and secondly, because it was coming from her.
"Well, bother telling me what it was?" I asked, annoyed.
She purses her lips.
"Nope. Figure it out for yourself." she replies.
I suddenly lost my appetite.
So I just sat there, racking my brain in what she told me that day.
As I did, I stared at her.
Her eyes seem to read sadly her book.
God, she's so beautiful when she's this timid.
She's not a 10/10, but she could sweep a guy off his feet.
That is, if she would admit being girly in the first place.
I, of all people, know her well.
I, of all people, know she's a tomboy at heart.
"I remember." I exclaimed.
Her head is still leaning towards the book, but her eyes snap towards me.
"You said, 'If we get out of this safe, I'm going to murder you'." I say.
"Correct." She replies.
"And the significance of that is?" I ask.
She purses her lips again and smiles.
"You're still alive aren't you? Remember, you're alive because of my whim." she says.
I stared at her blankly for a few seconds.
Then I began to laugh.
She giggles.
"We're both retards aren't we?" she asks.
"Yep, definitely dropped on the head as children." I replied.
She laughed even harder, so hard people were looking at her.
When the laughter died down, her usual sad gaze remained.
"Why do you always look so sad?" I ask.
She purses her lips again.
"I'm going overseas." She said.
I'm not surprised. She's rich. It's a miracle I was even friends with her.
"How long?" I asked.
She shakes her head.
"Permanently." She replies.
My heart stopped.
"Goodbye, I guess." I said it so casually even my mind was going "What the hell?!"
"Really, aren't you a bit more sad?" She asks.
"I really can't say much about what you do with your life. Do you really expect me to beg you to stay?" I replied. My mind screamed "What the hell are you doing?!"
She bit her lips.
"I knew it was useless to tell you." she says.
I sighed.
"I'd miss you, I really would." I told her.
She snorts.
"Remember the first time we met?" I asked her.
Her usual sad gaze returned.
"I remember." She replies.
"You were just a girl who could barely speak english properly." I say.
"And you were a bratty child whose hair is always cut unevenly." she replied.
We both grinned at our statements. That small tinge of nostalgia suddenly breaking the walls we both built between us.
"I never got to meet your siblings." She sighs deeply.
"Not that I'd want you too. My brother would never believe I'm friends with you and my sister would go-"
"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, my little brother's growing up!" She says in mockery of my sister.
I laughed just as hard as she did afterwards.
She stabs the meat, which is now on the table.
"Your friends don't know about me either." she replied.
"Are you really that ashamed of being associated with me?" she asked.
"No, you are." I replied.
She leans over the table and punches my shoulder. Hard.
Given that she's done that multiple times in the past, my shoulder has grown resistant to her manly girl punches.
"I hate you." I tell her.
"Me too. I despise your existence." She let out her tongue.
"My friends think I'm only into blondes because of you." I exclaimed.
"I'm not blonde, I'm golden sun colored." she explains.
I chuckled.
A sudden aura of silences made it's way in our presence.
"When are you leaving?" I asked.
"Monday." she replied.
"Lynn, it's already saturday, you thought to tell me now?" I replied.
"I thought you wouldn't care." She replies.
"I thought so too." I replied.
"So, this is goodbye." She says.
"yep." I replied.
We stood up, and as we did, she hugged me.
I might sound like a pervert, but I memorized everything I can.
Her clothes, her smell, the feeling of her skin, everything really.
"I am going to miss you. I'll never forget you." She said, tears in her eyes.
"Please do. I'm useless and forgettable. You'd have one less animal to worry about." I reply.
She punches me in the arm for the last time. I will miss this pain.
"Skype?" She asks.
"Are you mentally disabled? Viber all the way." I replied.
She bites her lip.
"I will miss your insults." she says.
"And I will miss your annoying presence. No wait, I won't." I reply.
She kisses me on the cheek.
"The next time we meet, I'll be your girlfriend, I promise." she says.
"I'm not expecting anything, you never keep your promises." I replied.
"I'm keeping this one." she muttered under her breath.
She turned her back on me, and with a final glance from her shoulder, she was gone.
I just stood there, and suddenly, I felt empty.
After the failure that was me confessing to Gabrielle, she stood by me.
Now she's gone elsewhere.
My college life was gonna be much more calmer with her gone.
That's a problem. I loved her chaos.
I went home, and got in bed.
I stared at the ceiling and a sudden tinge of pain came over my heart.
"Damn you, Brook Lynn, you actually made me care for you, and I thought I was heartless." I said to no one in particular.
I wanted to sleep. But I couldn't.
She was going to be in my dreams for a long, long time.
