Ditto

Ditto

A Poem by Brittany Zedalis
"

R.I.P. Mom. 1964-2013.

"

We watch a movie,

about ghosts and love,

about truth and justice,

and hear a word.

One word, sticking

with us for the rest

of your life, spoken

in moments of love.

I'm on my knees, in

front of the old and

the new, wind wrapping

its arms around me.

I plead.

But I hear nothing.

There was once a time,

when there was a reply.

I said I love you

and you simply said..

...Ditto.

Author's Note

Brittany Zedalis

For those of you who haven't seen the movie Ghost, a man is killed and the movie is about him trying to prevent his girlfriend from getting hurt by the person who killed him. My mom and I used to watch this movie a lot, and when we first watched it when I was little, the word Ditto stuck with us for the rest of her life. Instead of saying I love you in this movie, the character simply says Ditto.

I remember this movie well. My wife and I watched at least a dozen times, and she cried every time. It bothered her so much she asked me to never say "ditto." Perhaps she had similar fears? Now, you're living with that memory. I know they say "time heals," but I've always questioned that. I think the scars just become a bit tougher, but they always remain. A touching poem written from the heart.

Beautiful, yet sometimes people who unlike your situation might seek out the depth of the words ‘I love you’, and not heard can leave an icy emptiness🌹

I can definitely see how it can be taken that way as well. Thank you for reading! ^-^
This is a beautiful but sad poem about a vacant I love you in return.

On a side note I still love that movie.

Yeah. Just...yeah. I could write yet another tired cliche, but nothing quite covers it. So...yeah.

Nice scene set-up by the poetry. Create situation and proper use of words. I liked the movie Ghost. A old classic. Thank you Luna for sharing the amazing poetry.

Ditto is such a funny word. It's often hard to judge how much depth is behind its utterance. I liked this little piece. It was quite whimsical. Thanks for sharing :)

Luna, this is a beautiful tribute. Good parents often develop little nuanced "isms" with their children. It's all about building memories to last a lifetime. Things you can look back on later with fondness, beauty, and hopefully some humor. She obviously loved you very, very much. This 'Ditto' will stay with you for the rest of your life, and she will pop in on you at the most unexpected moments. What a great verbal legacy! Thank you for sharing this with us...:)

I read that one. It is very, very good. Nicely done, Brit! :)
I love how you ended it with the word DITTO because it ended with a bang. It was unexpected, but had to be said. :)

This isn't a romance poem. Ditto has a family-related meaning to me.

Ditto is something my mom and I used to say to each other.
