Prologue

The ground violently as a thunderous explosion awoke me in my cell.

“It’s time to go”, I thought as gunshots echoed throughout the max-security prison.

The guard patrolling our confinements looked around him in the daze and discord.  Suddenly, the doors on all the cells flew open. Chaos erupted and took over. I rushed out and threw myself upon the guard. With a swift crack of the neck, he collapsed on the floor like a limp noodle. I reached for the pistol in his holster and held it firmly.

Riots broke out simultaneously along with the prisoners. Prisoners and police officers lay on the floor beaten half to death. I sprinted down the hallway towards the meeting room.  Every 5 steps, there were a crowd of ruffians duking it out, clogging the passageways.

“I can’t get out with s**t stains blocking my way!” I resolved, gripping the gun tighter. I raised the pistol towards another mob and fired upon them. Screams and cries of pain arose as panic ensued, the people scattered in all directions.

When the dust cleared, bodies lay lifeless on the ground. “And stay down”, I murmured with a hiss, lowering the pistol. A hand grabbed and pulled on my long dark hair viciously. A tooth flew out of the attacker’s mouth as I pistol-whipped him in the face.

Multiple gunmen armed with rifles busted down the doors towards the meeting room and opened fire on the remaining delinquents. Many fled back their confinements where no bullets could reach them. 2 of the militiamen wrapped their arms around me and escorted me through the hole they made. The morning light shined upon my dark skin, nearly blinding me as I stepped outside. As my eyes adjusted, I took a deep breath of the fresh air around me.

There was a van I was guided to in the parking lot. “Hello Miss”, a few people in military gear said to me as I entered the van. A white girl with light red hair shook my hands solemnly with a big grin on her face.

“Bethany”, I thought as the doors shut behind us and the engine roared to life as we made our escape. “I hope you weren’t too cooped up I their!”, she replied happily. A smile formed in the corner of my mouth. “Not at all”, I replied humbly.

I was free, at least for now.
