Just Friends...

Just Friends...

A Poem by RhythmOfTheRiver

Why is it that every time I look into your eyes,

i catch a glimpse of

the long, flowy emerald dress i wore the other day,

the midnight blue ballerina flats i wore to Fiona’s party,

the white pearl bracelet i have only worn once in your presence;

complemented by the dreamy look in your eyes.

Why is it that every time I look into your eyes,

i catch a glimpse of

the class project we did together,

the party where we were the only sane ones,

the day i talked my heart out to you;

with a sweet smile etched on your face.

Why is it that now when I look into your eyes,

i catch a glimpse of

the gem-studded band decorating my ring finger,

the elegant, white ball-gown i wore to church,

the same platform where i exchanged my vows;

with a man called Chris,

But your eyes are teary, they speak of woe;

it’s not sweetness anymore that your face shows,

Anger and grief drawn across your face,

Your cheeks are still fresh with those tears that have long dried

as your teary eyes ask me the reason why

My heart skips a beat and it does me much pain,

though for the sake of your sanity and mine must i explain:

you did hold a special place in my heart and still do,

but not that love, which i have long given to Chris,

that of a unique and blooming friendship,

which brightens my day and perhaps yours.

But the truth is that

We are just friends,

And nothing more.

Just friends...

I love this poem and can relate to this! It happens all the time and no one can ever explain how harsh the pain feels to know that they are just friends when they could be a better version of themselves if only they would find a way out of what they are trapped in.
