A Poem by Rich
"

Insight

"

You unclouded my vision and taught me to see

What it is that drives men, rather than their deeds

The white whale was a terror, that much was true

But it was Madness that destroyed the ship and her crew

Insight is an asset when good will is in play

But clear eyes are a handicap when envy rules the day

Deciphering the why, when why not is preferred

Makes the seer think someone must surely be disturbed

I had to leave when no one else remained, no one that knew

No explanations, no mentor, there was nothing I could do

The seed that you planted lay dormant for a time

Until the why of things increasingly gnawed at my mind

We scar each other for no particular gain

The sense of loss, the sadness and always the pain

This isn’t so complicated, it’s simple and it’s true

Our reasons aren’t a mystery; it’s just what we do

My teacher, my guide, my grandmother and my friend

We will continue our lessons, this isn’t the end

This is a good piece, certainly the twist of words and imagery works well. There is a glimpse of the inner light, the spark of this creation, among the pretty fallen leaves, the song of this congregation.
There is of course loss, change, and the search for understanding or perhaps it is to be understood.

I love the Moby Dick reference!

This poem asks some tough questions and left me wondering about how much control any of us really have over our lives. Emotions may be basic, but mastering them is difficult (perhaps impossible). I was wondering about the line "Insight is an asset when good will is in play, But clear eyes are a handicap when envy rules the day". I read this to mean that good advice, help, or giving knowledge, is only helpful when people are ready to receive it.

We all look at the world through our personal set of tinted glasses. Working toward removing these filters so we can see eye to eye is a beautiful (and often unbearably painful) process. A toast to continuing our lessons!

Razor sharp perception can at times result in disappointment. Thank you for your kind words!
